YT Addict | Warning Will robinson warning'warning!! The other night about 10:30 I took the kids out ....just in the backyard for their final pee run before bed. I"m standing there looking around waiting for'em when I happened to look up and notice .....somethin' strange up on my neighbors fireplace chimminy Really Quite large with pointy ears. Didn't take long to figure it out It was a Great Horned Owl!!! That guy must have been a good 2 foot tall. gotta tell ya' got the kids back in the house fast' and made sure the slate was in the pet door that night! Those birds are big enough to easily carry off a small to med. size Yorkie or cat so as I always say.....Watch the sky....even after dark' not all the widdle birdies are in their nests sleeping after dark. http://i293.photobucket.com/albums/m...orned20owl.jpg

| Yep, been there...seen that! I took the boyz out at about 5:30 one morning and saw a huge owl sitting in the tree at our front deck...eating a duck So, I scooted the boyz right back inside, shut the door and let them use potty pads that day! I did manage to get his picture...man was he big! |

| I was watching "Ellen" on my DVR so I don't know when it aired, but they had a owl just like that flying back and forth to Ellen from its handler. They commented how they were silent when they flew. And you couldn't hear it at all, which is scary for its size.I know we had a owl in our neighbors huge pines a couple years ago when Kayti was a pup and we really watched them when we sent our girls out to go potty at night.I worried myself sick! I hope it find new hunting grounds soon. |

| I could have typed the same exact story ! I can't believe I read yours and the same thing has happened to us in the past month...We have put up a kiddie corral so my kids (3) can go out in the morning and the evening to pee and are close the the walls and door of our house...We now hung a outdoor mesh blind that we roll down (it almost reaches the top of the corral) and I stand in front of it..We even have a 6ft wall around our backyard !."Our" owl flies into the tree in the neighbor's yard and sounds like he's barking to lure them out ! They are never aloud to use the doggie door (good thing too) My husband has been shining a powerful flashlight into it's eyes until it flies away (his way of getting rid of it without shooting it !!!) The blind makes it look like a wall and surely the owl won't fly into it....A friend (who has 2 yorkies a mile away) was outside about 9 :30pm and an owl flew down to get her boy and she grabbed him and ran into the house...He was on a leash (not that the owl cared) and landed on the edge of the neighbor's roof watching.... So, between the owls and the coyotes and the hawks, their outside time is limited and they are never , ever out alone...It's a bad world out there at times!!! Someone said to put down a rubber rattle snake and move it around from time to time, some say it'll pick it up , so now I'm really confused!!

| That will strike fear into the heart of any small dog owner, thanks for the warning. Owls, Hawks, and Cyotes. I have them all here in Northern VA too, as well as rabid racoons. You dont have to live in the country anymore to see these predators. Could be the amazing number of rabbits, squirl and deer we have around here - no end to the number of prey animals. When you think about it, its us people who shrunk yorkies down to a cute little 3 or 4 pounds (in some cases). Now they are just about defenseless against creatures who wild dogs would not have reason to fear. |

| That is just plain scary! No owls that I've seen...but one night last week, I took Olivia out back to potty. There is a donkey in the field behind our backyard; that donkey was carrying on something terrible - and along with that, there were coyotes howling horribly, then somebody's beagles started in! It was downright eerie - we hurried back into the house....geesh !!

| I feel your panic. We have heard owl/s repeatedly this fall. I dont know, but i have never noticed them before. I go out with Addison every time he is outside, although it is still very worrisome.

| My father who lives only about 3 min. away had a bear in his yard and we both live in town. I never leave them alone.

| That is scary! We have predators here, too. Coyotes, hawks, bobcats - I swear, I worry constantly! I've fenced in my backyard completely, and never allow the babies outside without me or my son - and I'm constantly watching. But, ya know what - they're worth it all! I wouldn't give up one of my babies for or to anything!!

| How very scary. I am so glad that you were in "alert mode" and recognized the danger. Your post has served to remind me to LOOK up, down and all around, before letting the kids out on the back porch. We have all sorts of predators here - large dogs that roam, coyotes, hawks, owls, and some others that are a lesser threat, but still a threat - opposums and raccoons. |

| I hate thinking about any of that happening. We have had a hawk hanging out the past few days, let's just say I havn't taken my puppy out there! I'm even hesitant to let my cats outside. I hope nothing ever happens to anyones lil baby.

| I caught a glimpse of either an owl or hawk swooping down under my patio cover this summer, luckily my baby was indoors. I hear howling/barking of coyote packs at least a few times a week in the wee hours of the morning and there always seems to be a posting on our mailboxes of missing cats. My lil one never goes out with out me being there with her...I would'nt take the chance, it could all happen sooooooo quickly
