I am very happy with Shelby, she is a great dog and learning things very quickly right now. She is small enough for me to take almost everywhere with me but there ARE times when she just can't go! Today I left to play tennis and when I returned I heard that she was howling while I was gone

As in chin up to the ceiling and coyote cries coming out of her mouth. (My husband had checked on her and found her in her pen like that)

I don't know what to do. Should I crate her? Would that be a better way to leave her? She won't ever be left for more than 4 hours. Usually less. Or is fencing off a larger place like the kitchen a better idea.

I am just afraid she is going to hurt herself. When I get back from leaving her her pen is a mess. Water spilled, wee pads wadded up.

I know this is my fault. I am a stay at home Mom who stays home most of the time and we are both spoiled by each other's company.

Is she used to roaming free ? I am no help with this but maybe letting her stay in a section of the kitchen would work if you feel she'd be safe there - Mine would howl too if I crated them but I didn't crate train - if you have - then maybe she'll get used to it...

I think it a decision that you have to make based on what she's used to and safety....poor baby - I know they can sure howl loud too

Does she have any company...a cat maybe? Do you leave the TV on? Is she in an xpen? It's so hard to leave them but you are so right....sometimes there is just no choice! You could maybe give her sonething to dothat she loves but she only gets it when you leave. Does she like the Kong?

I too have what I call a nervous Nellie when I leave. I stay at home as well. What I have found is that if I leave her something with my scent and a few of her other favorite toys, she does much better. She has other playmates, to her it doesn't matter "she didn't get to go with Mommie" give this a try it hasn't cured her totally but she does much better, It may help your Shelby some. My little yorkies are silly though I can go outside just for a micro-minute and they all act like I have left them for a week with their happy greetings....

She was used to the xpen but since she is doing so well at the potty training I have been letting her run pretty free when I am home. Unfortunately, I am almost always home

The problem is I like her at my feet and running around me with toys ...but I do have to leave now and then.

(My cat is 19yrs old and too cranky for a puppy to be good company)

I guess I will have to stick her in the xpen even though I am home. I will try the kong (good idea) And the t.v. and the clothing.

It's wonderful being this loved but

Right now I am in my den and she is curled up in a little ball on a pillow. When I get up, she will follow me upstairs to see how I dress. She will be VERY happy that today's attire is the frontback

Try giving her more room fencing off with baby gates like family room kitchen area where she can be safe. My stays home almost 9 hours by herself like this and it has worked. You have to do what is the safest for her and most convenient for both. Good luck.

Oh poor baby! When I got Hallie I was not working and was with her 24/7 for 6 months so when I went back to work I had to figure out a way for it to work for her and Simon. They have what I call the condo area in my living room. It is an excercise pen with their crates (open), a potty pad, water, their safe toys, and their blankets. I leave my tshirt from the night before and the tv on. It took some time but they love it now. Now, if I couldjust get them to tell me what happens on Days of Our Lives everyday

Good Luck, it just takes some time.

The Kong is a great idea too. Mine don't much care for it so when I leave I give them a treat in a rubber treat ball and that keeps them occupied so I can get out the door.
