| Going Potty in the Muddy Rain with a Full Coat... HELP Keep Her Clean & Itch Free! We need help finding a solution for our 5 years old Beanie Baby, Lola. She's a sweet soul and we want her to stay that way. The Winter has just started here in California and Lola and I need help finding something to keep her clean, dry, itch free and most of all make her life easier. She is a retired Show Dog in a Medium Length Coat and hates to use Potty Pads. I don't mind taking her outside, but we need to keep her from touching them. She's very allergic to all most everything. I need something to accommodate her needs. This is why she is no longer a Show Dog. She's So High Maintenance But We Love Her. I've been cutting the fingers & Thumbs off of Surgical Gloves and putting the Thumbs on her front feet (their bigger) and the fingers on her back feet. Then I hold them up with her Top Knot bands. This takes us way to much time every time she needs to go out. I'm worried that if we don't find something fast, She's going to have resentments towards me and we don't want that. Here's Our List of Good and Bad: > One good thing is... she will wear what ever I put on her. And we will try anything. > She has allergies to the grass, leaves, weeds, and some things we don't know about yet. > I don't want to cut off her beautiful coat, because it keeps a lot of stuff from touching her sensitive skin. I also, don't want to keep her in Hair Wraps anymore. She's done it long enough. Now she wants to be a dog and we are going to do what ever we can, to let her. > I'm keeping her coat trimmed at a medium length as you can see in the photo below. I'm looking for any suggestions that will make her life joyful. http://www.yorkietalk.com/forums/alb...?dl=1225584438 > She wont use a potty pad. > She will only potty on the dirt or the cement. > We can't use a portable or synthetic grass. She's allergic to this too! > We have an enclosed balcony with a doggy door. > It needs to be something that is fast. > And most of all... it has to make her happy. I did find one product online called, The Pawz Dog Boots. This product is similar to balloons but they only cover up her toes and they are not very cheep. You get 4 sets for $12 - $15. I tried to buy balloon but the openings are way to small to get her legs into them. It's very similar to what we are doing with the Surgical Gloves but neither one of them are long enough to cover her upper legs. To bad they don't make fishing waders for Yorkies. Has anyone used this product before? Here is their site: PAWZ the world's only disposable and reusable, waterproof dog boot http://www.pawzdogboots.com/images1/main.jpg We appreciate all the help we can get with our problem. Thanks All, Diana & Lola

| Wow, I have no suggestions for you, but you are definitly in a tough situation and I hope you finally find a solution. How on earth did you find out that your dog is allergic to all those things, and do you know why? As far as I know mine isn't allergic to anything, and luckily for us she doesn't mind the rain at all anymore, but when we first got her she wouldn't go pee on our wet patio, so we had to put down a dry piece of cardboard each time. Then the cardboard would start to get wet after we'd leave it out there for a while, and then she just started to get used to it. My hubby actually took Roxy out for a walk in the rain today! She did wear a coat though, but it didn't help much... |

| I bought Zoe a raincoat. It does a pretty good job of keeping her covered. I also have a few of these raincoats for sale in this thread if you're interested... http://www.yorkietalk.com/forums/yor...er-brands.html |

| Wow! All those allergies, poor girl. Bless your heart for taking care of her! I agree with dray, sounds like she may get some relief with immune boosters, supplements, vitamins, something. It may not totally "cure" her, but surly there's something out there that will help her some. Have you tried a litter box on your covered porch? Kitty litter or the stuff they make for doggie litter boxes or even just plain sand that could be replaced as it's used. There are several brands/types of doggy boots that should go on pretty quick and easy. Even if the initial cost is a bit, they'd last for a long time and are designed for dogs so fit shouldn't be an issue. Gosh, what a dilemma, please keep us posted with what you try and the outcome.

| Pawz Dog Boots These dog boots are the best I've used yet. I got mine at Metropawlis Pet Boutique - Dog and Cat Toys, Beds, Clothing, Strollers, and Gifts for Pet Lovers. They stay on and are rubber so that Taro can still feel the ground. Taro can't use the thicker ones because it makes her walk funny so these are perfect. Kind of like little balloons. |

| This will be our first Winter together so we are trying to find out what will make her the happiest and what will be the easiest for us to do. Lola has had Allergy Tests done with her previous owners. They couldn't find the paper work on Lola's original Allergy Test results, but they did remember she's allergic to grass, leaves, pollen and all chicken products. I think they said the tests ran them either 300 or 600 dollars (I can't remember) but it sure was worth it. She was so unhappy and itching no stop. She also takes Allergy Pills 3 times a day to help her with the itching and hives As long as she don't miss a dose then she's very happy. My girl has always been taught NOT to potty in the house or on the patio (it's carpeted). So we're having a hard time trying to get her to potty in the house on a potty pad. I even tries soaking it in her urine, so she would smell it, but that didn't work either. Poor girl... it's absolutely raining outside today and she will not go outside to go potty. It's already after 5pm and she hasn't gone potty since early this morning. I've taken her out, but she keeps running back to the front door to get out of the rain. Funny thing, I can train my cats to use the human toilet, but I can't get my beanie baby (Lola) to use a pee pad. Huh? Unbelievable Stubborn Girl! Maybe I can train her to use the toilet too... Just a crazy thought I had but I don't want her falling in. Quote:

| Keep The Ideas Coming Please Nice product... I've never seen this before. I will be getting this if I can get her to go on a pee pad. I also, tried the holder that you can buy for the Pee Pad's (Petco sells them) but she won't use this either. Thanks for the ideas... keep them coming people!

| Fighting Allergies! Thank you to everyone that responded to my Thread. I'm still looking for ideas for Lola to be able to be a dog without the environment touching her sensitive skin. I think she needs a good boot (or hip boot ) that will allow her to travel outside during the Winter time. You know she never had these problems with her past owners, because she was living as a Show Dog. Most owners of Show Dogs keep their dogs in large dog crate or dog runs. There not allowed to roll around and play with out their hair being in hair in wraps. She hasn't had a lot of contact with her feet touching the real world before, and this is what I want for her. I want her to experience as much as possible, as long as she stays healthy doing it. She had never ran off leash before so we took her to the beach or the park. This is when we found she was allergic to the grass. So were still learning as we go and I'm not giving up this easy. I also looked at NuVet Labs Product Line and they have some great Vitamins and Minerals in their products. I'm just scared to give her anything else since I just got her on a diet that isn't making her sick. Last month on a week long vacation, she got very sick and we thought we might loose her. It was caused by (we think) either Well-Water, new treats or she could have eaten Wild Turkey or Coyote Stool. We caught her smelling it when we went out for a walk but we were unsure if she ate it. I think was from all of the different items. She was so sick she ended up with a Heart Murmur because of it. They think it could possibly go away once she get a bit stronger and gets back to her normal body weight. I do have her on Prescription Allergy Pill called, Chlorpheniramine (1 mg) and it has helped her with her food, grass, trees and pollen allergies. I help her out by not letting her make contact with these items. Which is hard to do during the Winter time. Especially with all the trees dropping all of their leaves. I was up until 3am last night keeping an eagles eye out for her needing to go out. I pulled up the carpet on our porch and covered it with potty pads. Yesterday I worked on training her to go in and out of her doggy door that she isn't that happy with using. As the night when on, she got up and went outside on her own, and then it happened.... SHE WENT POTTY! I was a proud mommy! Thanks to everyone advise! Quote:

| There are several types of synthetic grass, ranging from the very inexpensive stuff you buy on rolls at Home Depot to the stuff you'd SWEAR was real that is put in your front yard - or on NFL fields. At least ONE of them should be non-reactive for your girl. Even the expensive stuff could be useable ... you only need a few square yards for a potty area. One of the ladies on another forum I haunt had her whole back yard done with the stuff the NFL uses. She has 5 Aussies and was tired of the brown spots that ruined her yard. She kept her sprinkler system, except now it's only used to rinse the yard . |
