| concern over weight of newborn and mom concern over weight of newborn and mom -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- An friend of mine had a litter of pups yesterday and the mom just doesn't look like? any milk is coming in. She has maybe two different teats the pups can grasp (there are 4 puppies) but my girls usually have what we humorously call "jugs". I have not seen a female that doesn't have a showing of milk. She looks like maybe two of them are a tad bit swollen, if that but the rest look like she was never pregnant. I dropped by this morning and she said that most of the pups weigh similar to what they weighed yesterday except one little male. He weighed 4.5 oz yesterday when born and then today weighs 3 7/8 oz. I am a little worried they are not getting enough? How much is too much in a drop of weight for an infant. She gave her a tbsp of beer yesterday to help the milk come in and also has given her a few recipes of egg yolks, honey, and goats milk. She said she tried syringe feeding a little bit this morning for the tiniest one and he doesn't really get it down (more so she doesn't know how much is going down his throat or out on the napkin). Any suggestions or ideas about the weights to be concerned. Not sure what to say about the milk issue for the female. When I looked at her you can tell about two of the teats are being used, but they don't look full to me. Then again I am used to my girls being "loaded". I guess this is a question of to worry or not to worry? They all have at least clamped on for about 10 min yesterday that she knows of because she alternated them on the teats to make sure they all got some colostrum

| She needs to go to petsmart and buy a can of Esbilac goat milk for puppies. about 7 bucs a can. feed every 2 hours about one half cc of warm milk. Tell her the feeding should be done slowly may take 10 min to feed. After a few days the pup will start to really suckle. I like a medicine syring better that the bottles. Those nipple are just too big. even the tiny ones....Good luck. And also tell her the mom should be taken care of just like a new human mom....Bath her and give her some good chicken broth. and a little cottage cheese. If her tets are large and hard she needs to put a warm wash cloth on them and message gentle. This will stimulate the milk so she wont get ingorged.... |

| I breed bichons, and we had this problem once and the vet said to give her some chicken broth for stregnth and lots of cottage cheese to bring in the milk, or yogert is good too,,as for the puppys have her go to a pet store and get some puppy formula, we used first born, and it even has colostrum in it, she should get some puppy formula ASAP,
