| Opinions Needed Okay so my husband and i have finally decided on a date to get our yorkie. He has said for it to be a christmas present but has said i must pick the yorkie i want because there are so many different features on each one. What are your favorite features on yorkies such as color and body size? I have seen some small yorkies that are long and some that are short and compact is there a specific name for body size just as there are differnet names for face types ?Also can anyone please explain the difference between baby-doll face and teddy bear face yorkies a pic would be helpful also. Thanks |

| I am by far no expert, but here is what I think....a tiny featured face usually will be a smaller dog...shorter legs and tiny face. Though a smaller dog doesn't mean it is any better than a little bigger one, whatever your preference is. If you are searching for a teeny tiny one, learn what health problems may arise and what to look for (open fontella for example). "Baby doll" and "Teddy Bear" are just descriptive words of what the breeder feels they look like or think may catch your attention. Usually a fuzzy face will get these descriptions. However, you'll find fuzzy cute little faces without them also. You'll need to do some research on the breed. There are people who were told they were buying a Tea Cup (which is also only a descriptive word) and ended up with a pretty large adult Yorkie. You will find that 2 small parents can have a large (when adult) puppy and visa versa. You can't tell exactly what color your pup will be as an adult....only a best guess. You may want to call it a Christmas Present, but may not be able to find one for December 25th. It may happen sooner than that or later if you are going to do it right. You can't just find the "right/perfect" puppy because of a specific date. You will probably lose out. Take your time and educate yourself first. It will be a life long committement....and done right, it will be one you will never regret! No matter which one you pick, never use a collar, but do use a harness with the leash instead. Good luck and keep us posted. |

| Their tracheas (throats) are extremely senstive and Yorkies are prone to collapsing trachea. I wish you much luck and happiness with your search! |

| I researched a year and was on a year waiting list before I found Chloe, who had small parents but is now a silver and beige cotton coated 7 lb pet. Very smart and very easy to train but a little larger than I had in mind. I then set out to find another yorkie and saw a real cutie on the web last Christmas, near my home, so I spent a lot of money based on telephone conversations and a picture. She's my tiny, is the blue/gold silky haired one and is 3 lbs. Sometimes you cannot tell, no matter what, when they are young, size or coloring. But, both are terrific companions, for me and each other. Honestly, other than it makes it a little harder to carry both at the same time, Chloe is beautiful, smart and very obedient. Lacey is cute as a bug, short legged and I can brush her in two seconds flat. I wouldn't take a million for either one. |

| I agreed with Julz is very hard to know with exactitude how our yorkies will look when adult. Do your research and I hope you find a healthy little one. Good luck. |

| Hi, I just joined the other day and this is my first reply, but I feel compelled to urge you to get a puppy before or after Christmas. It just is not a good idea to bring a baby straight from his home into the hustle and bustle of the holidays.Too many people and too much confushion for their first few days of adjustment. They need a little time to get to know you and their new house... |

| Great advice from Julz and jwash and everyone! My "dream puppy" and what I told the breeders I talked to when I was looking for Baby Ava was a healthy, small girl (under 5 lbs as an adult) with big eyes, small, well set ears, short legs, as long as she is high, cobby body, silky, thick coat, short snout and a spunky temperament. It took me six months but I found her in Ava and then some!! I really got lucky in a sense but you really have to stick to your guns and not go on impulse when you see the first cute puppy because they are all cute. The size was not as important to me as the baby doll face which is a really short muzzle without being too short as to affect her health, big eyes and lots of thick hair on the face. I think Teddy bear is more of a wide face and "pixie" is really small features like you find on an "extreme tiny" (under 3 lbs as an adult) I started a thread a while ago that you may want to read about How to: Have the Best Chance of getting a small puppy who will be a Small Adult http://www.yorkietalk.com/forums/showthread.php?t=9159 Here is a pciture of Ava at 6 weeks and another at 11 weeks so you can see how she has evolved. Good luck and PM me if you want some breeder references for this particular look. Last edited by SoCalyorkiLvr; 08-17-2005 at 05:15 PM. |

| Hi and congrats on your decision. You don't say where you are located. The kind of winter weather you have where you live is a factor you should consider. I got Bo as a Christmas present for my children in 2004. Last winter for us was particlarly harsh. It was bitter cold and windy a lot and we had a huge snowstorm. Bo was still very tiny at that time and I hated to have to take him out. Even with a sweater on he just shivered and shivered. I will never get another puppy for Christmas as long as we live here. Our winters are just too hard on a tiny yorkie puppy. It you live in a climate that has mild winters, then of course this won't be an issue. Just food for thought.

Congrats on your impending new puppy. I agree with the above post. When you bring this creature home it will surely be tiny. Chewy was about 1 and 1/2 lbs!!! and you are basically tied to the dog for the first few weeks and you will be getting up in the middle of the night for about 3 weeks to let it pee. I was exhausted!!! I'm not sure what teddy or baby doll mean but if you are getting pup from a breeder in your area, you will know the right one when you see it. Let us know how it all goes. | |
