| Help - walking on a leash Smoky is very good at walking on his leash when we go out for long walks. But I'm now trying to train him to go out to potty on his leash. When we get outside, he simply walks circles around me, we can stand there 30 minutes, and he just walks circles. It is the usual time I take him out, say the same "code" words, the only think different is the leash. We have a big yard, and I normally let him run lose to potty, but I have a babysitter coming to stay with him while I'm on vacation next month, and I can't figure out how to get him to potty while one the leash? Any tips would be great, thanks so much!

| I agree with walking or running around to make them have to go. If you have a crate, i would just put him back in the crate (if he wont go) and try it again within 10-15 min. Or, take your pup around the block to stimulate more smells, and make them want to go!

| Be sure to take a few treats out with you so that as soon as he potties you have a treat to give him. This should help to reinforce what it is you are wanting him to do. If you wait to give the treat until after you get back into the house he may not associate it with the actual pottying on the leash. Good luck! I have issues with Gracie sometimes on the leash too. But usually it's because we are somewhere new and she's more interested in looking around.

| You can try a long line as well and give him more room to move around. He needs to move to do his business. JL

Here's the thing - if you stay out there long enough he is going to have to go eventually. If you get bored (or annoyed) crate him until you can try again. The crating isn't forever, he should figure it out in a few days that he has to pee when you take him out on the leash. Taking the treats outside is a great idea. That way they know the treat is for peeing not for coming back in.
