| Blue, Red or Chocolate?? I am posting to see if the message that I haven't posted will go away. LOL I rescued a toy or teacup YT earlier this week. It is 4.5 mo. old and I would say appx. 2.5 lbs. He seems very delicately boned to me. He has very little hair. The lady told me she had shaved him, but I don't think it is true. What hair is there is very sparse, you can see his skin, he hardly has any hair on his ears. The very short hair along his spine is wirey. The hair on his legs is thin. The only hair with any length is on his head and muzzle. Head hair is wispy. His coloring is charcoal grey. Around his face and legs is light goldish brown. He has light colored eyes. A large black pupil, but the surrounding color is goldish/blue hazel. His nose is liver colored. His eyes are not black rimmed. Foot pads are dark brown, nails are black but not super black. He seems to be healthy and happy. He has plenty of energy but calms down for a snuggle pretty quickly. He is bright and picking up on the house breaking pretty good. Wees outside, poos inside. Oh well, it is small and I have only had him since Wed. She gave me some papers to register him with American Purebreed or somesuch, but she put unknown on the registration # for the parents. She said she got the dog from her mother who breeds them. I know this is not a quality dog, but I didn't want to leave it there. The young woman was about 8 mo. pregnant and had a toddler about 18 mo. chasing around after this pup. There was also a BIG dog in the house. They were moving into this single wide mobile home. It had steep rickety stairs. There was no yard at all. It was surrounded by thick trees. No grass or fence. I went into rescue mode. I already love him. He has a great disposition. He took to me immediately. He has an uncanny ability to stay out from underfoot, yet is always just a step behind me. So many of these little fellows get tangled up in your feet. I know ya'll will want a pic but right now I don't have a digital camera. Asking for one for Xmas. Thanks for any thoughts you have on this. Kerry Alvord, TX |

No. Even the ones that are supposed to be blue born or chocolate have more hair than he has. New born pups have more hair. He almost looks like a Chinese Crested. LOL. Kerry | |

| He could be a mix or just a very poorly bred yorkie. It really doesn't matter, he needed you and I'm sure he'll give you lots of love. I'm glad you got him out of there.

I ♥ Joey & Ralphie! Donating Member | Was the person breeding for chocolate or red? Sometimes a condition known as Alopecia or Blue Born can affect yorkies. It's caused by having two receive genes where two dominant genes should be, one recessive gene isn't bad, and will result in red or chocolate, but two can cause something know as the blue born. They tend to lose body hair, and get very leathery skin that is like an elephant hide, and can cause extreme pain. That's why many people don't believe the red and chocolates should be bred, even though some think it's pretty, because this condition can result. I'm not sure that's what you are describing though, or perhaps your baby has a mild case. | My dog has early on set Alopecia but it is the right colour but went silver early and now is going blond on her back. Bold nose and very limited coverage on ear. It has hair but not a great deal. To the point I was told not to shave it for the summer it not grow back so just trims. We did give melitonine for a while to help grow some hair. In Blue borns my understanding is the hair is brittle my dog has very soft and silky hair. Best course of action be to find a vet that specializes in skin and hair and see what they say. My vet called in back up right away when I asked about the hair as we thought we might have leather ear and nose happening. JL

| sounds like you might have a chocolate or blue-born puppy..or maybe some sort of combination. It's hard to know without pictures..and honestly, with an unethical breeder it's almost impossible to know whether or not you're getting a purebred dog or a mix. I would get him to a vet to get checked out and would recommend doing bloodwork before he's neutered to check for any underlying issues.

| Blue, Red or Chocolate?? Gucci is a morkie (5 months on the 1st) and it sounds like your new puppy is going through the same thing he did. We thought we were going to have a new "morkie hairless" on our hands but loved him anyways. I checked everywhere (including our vet) for information on yorkies or maltese going through a transitional hair loss period, but could find nothing. After speaking with a Morkie breeder in Florida, I changed his food from Royal Canin to Life' s Abundance and whether that was the answer or not, he's coming along, I'm adding pictures so you can see where he started (on Eukanuba food, then Royal Canin and now Life's Abundance (last 2 pictures). As you can see in the second picture, Gucci had very little hair on his legs. His body was sparse and he had the "old man" skin (comb over) showing on his head. Hope this helps. |
