| Male Dogs: The good, the bad, the ugly and the special! Hello!!!! I am sure you have heard about me thinking and searching for a companion for Esme. Most of you are probably like 'I wish she would just buy another dog already and stop asking questions!' I really like to think things to death though before I make a decision. I originally wanted to get Esme a female companion. Why? Because I have never had any male dogs in my life... But recently, I started thinking about getting a male. Esme is sooo special that I think it would be nice to have my special little boy too! I always tell Esme that she is my little princess. With a male buddy, she won't have to share the title. So, those of you with male yorkies, please give me the inside scoop on what it's like to own a male dog. I do not plan to breed and already had Esme spayed so I would neuter my male dog ASAP. Also, Esme is pee pad trained and I love it. It has worked out so great for us I would like to train our second dog the same. I'm curious to hear about other pee pad trained males. So here are my questions... 1. Is your male dog neutered? 2. How old was he when he was neutered? 3. Does he lift his leg to pee? 4. Does he mark? 5. Does he hump stuff? (I know, weird question, I'm not too into dogs humping and I don't think Esme likes it either). 6. Is he pee pad trained? Thank you soooo much guys!!!!!!

| I have a male(4m) and a female(almost 5m) I have only had him a month and he has done really well his first mommy had him pp trained to a pad and he is still really good with it. I have only noticed him lift his leg 1 time and that was outside on a tree(about a week ago) but I have not seen him do it again. I will say he is a big love bug and my first male dog ever. I also like the females better but he was just so cute I could not pass him up and just kinda happend but he is a very good boy and I now dont know what I would have done if I had not gotten him.. I would say go for it they are just as sweet if not sweeter. 1. Is your male dog neutered? No not yet 3. Does he lift his leg to pee? No (only 1time) 4. Does he mark? No 5. Does he hump stuff? (I know, weird question, I'm not too into dogs humping and I don't think Esme likes it either). He only humps after I give him and Princess there baths, that only happens for about 20mins, but other than that no 6. Is he pee pad trained? Yes he is better (90%) with the pee pad than Princess and he is younger than her by a month(4months,& almost 5months).

| also I forgot to say the reason I have never had a male was cause I was also afraid of the marking , humping and other boys problems but so far have been very lucky I have a well mannered little boy. (knock on wood)

| 1. Is your male dog neutered? Yes 2. How old was he when he was neutered? 6 months 3. Does he lift his leg to pee? Not so far....he's 9 months old 4. Does he mark? no, never has 5. Does he hump stuff? (I know, weird question, I'm not too into dogs humping and I don't think Esme likes it either). Bo only humped things when he was a tiny little guy, why, I don't know. He's never done it since, before or after he was neutered. 6. Is he pee pad trained? no, we have a large yard. I take him outside and it also serves for short daily walks. Mari, I will say this about marking...my mom's maltese marked like crazy, inside her house for years. Because of that, at age 7 she finally had him neutered. He's never done it since. My male schnauzer has never marked inside the house but marks like crazy outside. He has killed some of my landscaping. But yorkies are so tiny that even if he did mark outside it wouldn't hurt anything. I call Bo the Little Prince. The way he plops himself down on all my pillows like he owns the place, it fits. Too cute. So yours could be the little prince to go with your little princess!!!

| My answers are EXACTLY the same as Iheartyorkies. I think the neutering helps with all those problems that you are concerned with...but I could be wrong. |

| 1. Is your male dog neutered? Yes 2. How old was he when he was neutered? 1 year. I kind of missed the boat on that one because I was so nervous to have it done. Charlie was barely 4 lbs. But now I'm glad I did it. 3. Does he lift his leg to pee? Yes! I think if I had got him neutered earlier, he would have squatted. My pug who was neutered at 6 mos squats. 4. Does he mark? Yes, but we are starting over with crate training again. 5. Does he hump stuff? Once in a while, only to establish dominance over the pugs. It's actually pretty cute! 6. Is he pee pad trained? He goes outside. He ripped up the pee pads too! I just didn't like the idea of a dog peeing inside, so we bring him outside. Here is his Dogster page in case you wanted to see what he looks like: http://www.dogster.com/pet_page.php?i=99046&j=t

| 1. Is your male dog neutered? Yes 2. How old was he when he was neutered? 1-1/2 years 3. Does he lift his leg to pee? Yes 4. Does he mark? Yes. He habitually lifts his leg on the sofa. This is a habit he learned when I let him run around in the house as a puppy with a belly band on. Obviously, I do not recommend this... 5. Does he hump stuff? (I know, weird question, I'm not too into dogs humping and I don't think Esme likes it either). Another left over puppy habit, but he only does it occasionally when he's frustrated. 6. Is he pee pad trained? No. He goes outside. My boy is 2-1/2 now and we still have issues. Early neutering seems to be the answer. I'm still using the belly band, but I use it as insurance now (and I KNOW for sure if he has pee'd even a drop) and we're back to going outside on a schedule and giving treats and a click when he does it right. Even with these problems, he is a living doll and I do not resent having to deal with these issues. Good luck, CJ |

| I don't own a male but have dog sat for my mom's little male maltese. The only complaint I have about him is he gets kind of stinky from peeing on his long hair because he lifts his leg and pees on it. |

| I have a female and male. Skippy is just so full of energy and fun. I wouldn't trade him for the world. 1. Is your male dog neutered? Yes 2. How old was he when he was neutered? 7 months 3. Does he lift his leg to pee? Less since he's spayed. 4. Does he mark? Once in a while, but he's getting so much better since he's been neutered. 5. Does he hump stuff? (I know, weird question, I'm not too into dogs humping and I don't think Esme likes it either). Not since a week after being neutered. 6. Is he pee pad trained? No we're working on outside. |
