| To brush or not to brush... Hiya, Ok, so I have yet another question! lol Do any of you brush your dogs teeth? I haven't done it to previous dogs but am wondering if it's something I should be considering with my new Yorkie pup. I saw some tooth brushes and paste earlier while shopping for my lil girl but they all looked too big! I just cant imagine being able to get one of those in her mouth! Jess |

| I am using a child's tooth brush when brushing mine. Granted, I don't do it everyday but once a week. I am going to try and do it more often. I am getting some petzlife also. I have read on here that it does a really good job on tartar. So far Hot Rod's teeth have been fine. Maggie is just 18 weeks so she still has baby teeth. As a matter of fact I just brushed them today and she did wonderfully.

Donating YT 30K Club Member | I do know. Pixie ended up with gum disease at age 2 and had to have them professionally cleaned and 5 teeth pulled. So now they all get their teeth brushed every night and I put Petzlife on 3 times a week.

My friend just rescued an 8 y/o that NEVER had a cleaning and "maybe" some brushing (not sure though). Anyway, poor little girl had an infection in her mouth (for God knows how long) and she had soooooooo much s*** built up on her teeth that she couldn't close her mouth all the way (so sad). Well she got her first very needed cleaning and 20 teeth pulled - BUT - she is now pain free! SO YES - Start early and Brush Teeth! | |

| I Brush His Teeth Daily..... ....with a red finger holder that has bristles on them like a brush. Two came in the package and they do prettty good. It took him a while to get comfortable with me doing it. After I do them, I give him a dental treat too. There are many out there that have ridges on them to help in getting between the teeth. Oh, I use the peanut flavor of toothpaste, called "Petrodex" which Petsmart recommended to me. |

I ♥ Joey & Ralphie! Donating Member | Since teeth are considered one on the Yorkshire terrier's weaknesses, care for them is extremely important. I too brush Joey's teeth using poultry flavored toothpaste and use Petzlife, I prefer kibble for this reason, and give Joey Bully Sticks for the same reason. At age two, so far, so good.

| Petzlife is mint flavored gel toothpaste that works pretty well on tartar if you use it frequently. I have it on my website if you're interested. I just picked Sammy up from her dental. She already had bad teeth when we got her @ 10 months and she fights me so bad when I brush her teeth so at 2.5 yrs old she had to get a dental. She had 1 tiny tooth extracted. You can bet that no matter how much she fights me I am going to brush her teeth more often. Loki just had his dental a couple months ago and he's almost 4. No extractions and he really only had 4 teeth that had tartar on them, his canines and his big molars in back. I brush his teeth a lot more thoroughly (because he lets me) and I think that helps a lot. So, at $300 a dental plus antibiotics, pain killers, and anesthesia... BRUSH!!! P.S. Kid toothbrushes work best and they are like 2/$1.

I think its a great idea. I read in a Yorkie book that a lot of older toy dogs die from tooth decay problems because their mouths are so small so teeth are more crowded than in a big dog. Also, the interaction is good for social health too. Being able to touch and brush your dogs teeth is a great thing! If you ever need to give your dog medicine, you will be glad that you did that! I wish I would have started brushing Milo's teeth when he was a puppy, We are just starting to brush his teeth and he HATES it. And when we had to give him medicine, because we hadn't played with his teeth and mouth so he was like "What the hell are you doin mom" and he wasn't havn' it at all!

I ♥ Joey & Ralphie! Donating Member | The Petzlife I use is either in a spray or gel form, it's not a toothpaste, but a product that is suppose to soften tartar, and then you brush it away, I think it would be difficult to use this as a toothpaste because most dogs hate the taste and would put up quite a bit of fight. The toothpaste should be pleasant tasting. Here's a link to the manufactures website for details. PetzLife Products Inc - Products For a Healthier Pet

YT 1000 Club Member | I brush Maggies teeth and have since she was 16 weeks when I brought her home. She will be 3 in April and I am happy to say she has all of her teeth with the exception of 1 that came in sideways. I have just started the boys and Friday on the teeth brushing.

| Thanks so, so much for all those wonderful replies guys! It has made up my mind, I will definitely be brushing from now on. I'll have to try hard with Ellie I suspsct as she's never had her teeth brushed before and she's 2.5 years old. The plus is that ever since she was a teeny pup I've made a point of checking her mouth sos he's used to me handling her mouth. Keep your fingers crossed for me! lol My next question, lol, which Petzlife product do I buy? The gel or the spray? Can I use the products on those finger toothbrush thingies? Or do I need to get one of their triple toothbrushes? Thanks so much for all the help you guys, you have no idea how much I appreciate it! You guys are he best! Jess |
