Ok, maybe I am reading too much negative stuff! This is my first Yorkie so I am trying to read all I can about them. But honestly the more I read the more worried I get! I read so much about excessive barking and separation anxiety that I am now worried I'll never be able to raise a well adjusted, quiet yorkie!!

Pita is 13 weeks old and so far she only barks occasionally while playing. I have successfully left her in her ex-pen for a few hours a couple times. (Which I worried about as well and other people made me feel better when I posted about it.) I'm afraid to leave her for too long, so I turned down a trip to the zoo with my sisters family. I can't relax when I go anywhere more than 3 hours. Does this get any better? Am I over worrying? Anyway I'm hoping that once again YT's will help me feel better. Please tell me about your well adjusted, quiet yorkies and about what age you were able to leave them home without panicking!

You have come to the right place. Welcome! We have a 7 y/o female. She has never had a problem with separation anxiety, and although she does bark, we could control it better if we worked harder. Honestly, we have trained her pretty well, but we didn't do the best job we could have. All that being said, she is a WONDERFUL companion and we love her very much. We take her with us on vacations, and I take her to work with me occasionally. She likes to sleep on the comfy chair in my office.

She learned several tricks in a very short time (sit up, dance, roll over, play dead, shake hands) so I know she could learn anything if we hung in there better. We totally love her, and my husband would not have another bread. Best of luck with your baby, and hang around Yorkie Talk. You will get some great advice.

Both of my girls are on the quiet side. Gracie will bark if she hears a noise or if the door bell rings. Holly will bark for the same things, and, she will bark at the cats. When we are in the car, Holly will bark if she sees a pedestrian. Overall, I would say they are quiet and well adjusted. When I leave for work, the "go to your room" on command, which means they go to their ex-pen where they happily snooze all day. I got both in the habit of this from day one. At first Gracie had a bit of separation anxiety, but she would quit crying as soon as I left the house. Holly never cried when I left, because she was with Gracie. I think you may be over worrying. Just get in the habit of putting them in whatever confinement you plan to use and be consistent. In time they learn that you will come back and their "room" with a soft bed, food, water and toys is a great place to spend the day.

When I first got mine I gained 15lbs I stopped going to the gym because I didnt want to leave them alone! It gets easier to be away and you realize its okay to leave for a few hours

My Zoe has no problems with seperation anxiety or with excessive barking. I think she is pretty calm and well adjusted. She barks if someone comes into the yard but stops when I tell her to. She doesn't bark when someone comes to the door but is excited to see whoever it is. She prefers to go with me and even tries to sneak out ahead of me but she always seems fine when I get home and exhibits no obsessive behaviours at all. Hope that helps.

Suzi is 6 months old. She is quiet . Sometime's she will look out of the second story window and bark, or she will bark a little at our birds. that is all. Suzi does not even bark at people or when they come over. Instead, she wants all their attention

Suzi sometimes, has barked when she knows that I am outside the door or not far away. She lays down right at the front door too. But, nothing major. I have been gone more then 6 hours before , and she is fine. I ask the neighbors and they tell me they never hear her.
You will be fine with your new baby. Yorkie's do have their own temperments nad not all of them are the same. I believe there is A lot of variety between the Breed.

We got Mia 2 yrs ago (@ 10 wks old) and I think we worried more about her being alone than she was. She's kinda quiet but will bark if someone comes to the door, or she sees another dog walking down the street or at the cat that teases her. We just hated leaving her when we went to work so we ended up getting Max last year. Two are better than one!!!

He's a little pain in her butt but she loves him!!! We still don't leave for long periods of time other than for work, but that's by choice. Neither one of ours barks at air, they bark for a reason and like I told my skin kids.... that's what dogs do! I appreciate it when they tell me someone is here. They can get riled up over the cat - but we've learned to tell them "NO bark" if they start getting to excited. Hope this helps ya out.

Gus only barks when someone comes to the house. For a long time, I wondered if he was able to bark because I didn't hear him do it until a couple months after I got him! He's a good guy, too, while I'm at work - as long as the pens and pencils are out of reach (loves to chew them). He doesn't mess up my furniture or get into anything he shouldn't. I think it's easier with little dogs because they can't really reach much of anything. I'm sure Pita will be fine!

wellll.... Hope's breeder (lksdolls) said once that hers "barked if a fly farted"... WELLLL I got the pure blood in Hope.. haha.... Tootie barks if the others get him started but he doesnt bark just for the fun of it...
I do have my own personal ALARM service with them and my other pup Tinker, she is a BARKER.. I dont think they would bark so much if she didnt get them started.

As far as well adjusted.. welllll, I have one of each! Tootie LOVES everyone and Hope HATES everyone... she is very nervous but he is not... Tootie goes CRAZY when I leave the house but Hope does not, so I guess if I put them together I have a well adjusted, calm yorkie.. lol

I wouldnt trade either of them for anyting in the world! The love that these two pups have for me makes up for anthing either of them could give me..

I have 3 yorkies now and had 3 previously and all of my past yorkies never were barkers and never had seperation anxiety even though I worked full time and they were only dogs. The 3 I have now have learned how to bark from my terrible barker 11 year old pom. I need to work more on all of their barking. But if one barks it sets the others off. I really think if they were only dogs and didn't learn from my pom they would all be much quieter. None of them have had any problems with seperation anxiety either, but I am home most of the time. I do feel better leaving them for awhile since they have each other. You will love having a Yorkie and they really do fit in to your lifestyle.

Mocha wasn't a barker until I took him to puppy school

All the other dogs would bark non-stop while he stayed quiet as a mouse. I really think he picked up the bad habit from them, 'cause after those classes, he started getting pretty yappy

Most of the problems are caused by anxious owners .

Hot Rod was really easy. He really didn't bark until recently. With the nice weather I've been leaving the slider open to the sunroom and all the windows in the sunroom open. Well there is a dog across the creek that he barks at and if he happens to see the tall grasses and trees swaying in the wind he'll bark. Doesn't bark at the doorbell or people coming in the house. Until we got Maggie, I used to take him just about everywhere with me so he is still wanting to go but he is okay if I leave him. I've gone back into the house to get something I've forgotten and he's back to laying on the sofa getting ready to sleep!

And up until Maggie, he had the full run of the lower level minus 1 bedroom and didn't have any accidents or issues.

I agree, many teach their Yorkies to misbehave without knowing it. They are very perceptive and will cue off of your emotions. Be firm, consistent, and place yourself as the pack leader.

The only time Pepper barks is to get my attention, when he feels he is being ignored. (and he just started doing this) All I do is look at him and say no. Then I put my finger to my lips and say shhh. It works. I read here about somebody that did that and it worked for them, so I tried it.
