| Will this do any damage to the poor yorkie? About an hour ago, I watched a man pick up his 5 lb yorkie by the scruff of the neck and let him hang there for about 20 seconds. It killed me to watch this. Unfortunatly, nothing could be done about it Hes still only a pup! Around the same age as keely (4 months).. This has be petrified of this man. And im so scared for the poor puppy! Will it cause an permanent damage to the pup? If i call somebody like a shelter or something, will they do anything about this? I cannot beleive i witnessed this happen Should i have confronted him? I over heard him talking to a woman about him (trying to show off i assume and then he says " hes about five lbs, see!" And he picks him up by the scruff pf the neck! What do i do?! |

| I don't think there's anything wrong with that. Puppies are carried around by their mothers by the scruff of their necks. It doesn't hurt them at all. I still pick up Franklin (almost 1 year) and Maggie (almost 4 years) by the scruff of their necks every so often.

| No worries. It shouldn't hurt the pup at all. You do have to be careful how it is done because if they are picked up too close to the head, the eyes can be pulled wide open. I scruff Ellie sometimes and she is fine. It isn't cruel but I do understand that it might look that way. Sometimes I have to to try and get some control and that is what their mother would do. I think that the Dog Whisperer does it too.

I have picked my dogs up like that before. Especially if they are overly excited. It releases feel good endorfines(sp?), they will calm them down. Sometimes if I need to pick them up and they are acting crazy-it is a safe way of getting them- they can't just jump out of your arms this way. With that said, I don't just leave them dangling out there.... | |

| I know that animals such as cats and dogs pick up thier babies in this way so I don't think it can hurt them....not sure about letting them dangle for 20 seconds though.

| i know many animal parents carry their babies by the scruff of their necks at times. However, i think it puts the pup in a vulnerable position, and looks uncomfortable. Also, if they wiggle it is hards to hold them like that, and they could take a fall.

| With ferrets, we scruff all the time... but they are built differently than a dog and having them hang in the air is different. I have grabbed my puppy by the scruff when he's being bad by finding something to chew, it will allow me to have more control by removing the article from his mouth. However, I never dangle him from the air. I usually scruff while holding him, it's just to clam him down.

| forgot cats seem to calm down when they are done this way. I really don't know if it actually calms dogs down. But I have seen it done. I wouldn't do a yorkie they seem breakable. |
