| Prednisone dosage?? Hallee went to the vet today, she has been itching like crazy for the last few days. He said it was some kind of skin irritation and prescribed her 2.5mg 2 times daily (1/2 of a 5mg tablet twice a day), along with Cephalexin 2 times daily. She weighs 4.5 pounds @ 3 years old. Is this a normal dosage of Prednisone? I know I shouldn't second guess the vet but we always check out everything about a medication before giving it to our girls, I could find all kinds of side effects but no place had dosages. Thanks....

| You should always second guess medical care whether for our pets or our humans. I am not sure what the exact dose is but I can look it up in my VDR... Hope the itchies go away soon and the dose will be a moot point. |

| I had to click this because I am taking prednisone for an allergic reaction I had to augmentin. I am getting married this weekend and needed it cleared up fast so I didn't second guess for myself, but I never thought a dog could take it! Hmm...my vet did have me give Lucy like 1/4 of a pepcid one time when she was sick. I hope someone on here can help!

| You asked if any of us had our furbabies on Prednisone....Piccolo was on Prednisone for about six months, for a completely different problem. She started off weighing 7 lbs. (It made her gain weight.) The Vet Dermotologist slowly moved the amount up and slowly moved it down, after she went into remission. I think it started at a quarter of pill, twice a day. The most she was on was 1 whole pill, twice a day. When the amount was at the highest, I had to keep her away from other dogs, because it caused her immunity to be very low. (Other side effects, too.) I don't know if this helps - hope so....

| My Baby Zoey is on prednisone now for inflamation of her spine, she weighs 3 lbs. The vet did tell me that it would increase her appetite (and it did). She takes a 1/4 tablet twice a day for 7 days. She will be off it Thursday. But it did help her alot. I'm just curious to see how she does when she gets off it. |

| Oh no that sounds like a lot. Mimi was taking 1/2 pill 3'xs a week and at the time she weighed almost 10 lbs. Since being on the med she's gained weight and now she's 12 lbs so he has her on 1 pill every other day. They do gain weight from being on that medication. She's on it for 2 month and then off for 3 weeks. Its something about the med that you cannot just get them off it cold turkey....you have to wean them off it. I forgot what it is but will look into it and let you know. But then again it could be that he has my girl on it like that due to allergies. |
