| Pet Supplies/Stores I'm getting my yorkie in two days! I can't wait!! But I just had a general question on getting pet supplies and what not. I've read in other threads to not buy or buy certain things from pet store...What things would recommend I get from a store like Petco or Petsmart? Or avoid and get them somewhere else cause it's of better quality or is cheaper? Thanks!! |

| Welcome!! How excited you must be!! Please post more about your baby and of course pictures...we must have pictures. I find that most of the items that PetSmart and PetCo carry are of good quality. Personally, however, I stay away from pet stores that actually sell puppies. Because of where they get the puppies, ie: Puppy Mills, I do not want to support their stores in any way. I realize that these types of stores may be all that some areas have available to them, but for myself, my conviction is to not support stores that keep this horrible industry going. There are many great members on this board that sell nearly anything that you could want. The most important thing is a good quality pet food. There are many threads here that give great info, or post and ask specific questions, many are more then willing to help. The only problem is this board moves so fast sometimes that your post will quickly get pushed off the front page. But keep asking and don't get discouraged.

| I encourage you to seek out your local independent pet store or boutique. You'll find just about anything you could need at smaller pet shops and you'll be supporting your local economy. They can help you select a food and supplies you will need! Have fun with your new puppy!

| I dont shop at petstores but I go to Petsmart and Petco. I am usually in there picking up fish food but I always end up picking up something for my yorkies. I like their toys and clothes, harnesses and leashes. Petco has very cute Halloween costumes too. I dont buy food there but have sometimes tried treats there.

| I guess I should clarify - don't go to "pet shops" that sell pets, but there are tons of small independent retailers that are going to have higher quality products than the big boxes and better service.

| When I first got my pup I went to Petco and spent a small fortune for basic supplies like a bed, puppy gate, potty pads, leash, collar, toothbrush, shampoo, etc. But then I slowly started to shop around and realized that I had overpaid on almost EVERYTHING I bought. The retractable leash, puppy gate, and potty pads were all cheaper at Wal-Mart and Target... so I learned a valuable lesson. Also- for premium dog foods I found out that my local independant pet stores carry more of the higher quality or specialty items like Merrick, Canidae, Wellness, Chicken Soup for Doglover's foods and Petco does not (except for Wellness). You can find a better selection of items like harnesses and bully sticks through yorkietalk too. I try to buy as much as I can from the independant stores or from yorkietalk members just to support smaller businesses. |

But in regards to buying quality food for your little one, I would seek out independantly owned pet supply stores. They usually care good, quality foods for reasonable prices. And you can do for the Whole Dog Journal food listing. You might be able to find it in the food/diet section on the forum to get ideas on what brands are good for your baby. Good luck!

| My suggestion would be to look in your phone book and see how many pet supply stores are in your area and check them all out before you get your baby, that way you can see who has the best prices, and best selection. you can always go to walmart or target sor supplies, but for good quality food, you will need to go to a pet store like petsmart or petco, If you have a store in your area called pet supplies plus, they have just about every good quality food out there, I started feeding my babies chicken soup for the puppy lovers soal, and they like it the best so far, also the difference in their coat was amazing, and their stool became smaller firmer, and less stinky.lol It has meat for the first 2 ingredients,(chicken and turkey) and it also has salmon and duck and veggies, in addition to lots of omega 3 and omega 6 the fats needed for a shiney and healthy coat. this is just a suggestion, I know deciding what food to feed can be tough. good luck with your new baby.
