I was at the beach at our cottage on Sunday. The sand was really hot so of course, my husband was holding Mia cuz I know the sand was just too hot for her tiny paws (I myself couldn't even walk on the sand without running). So off we were, taking a walk and we see some people we know. We stop to chat with them as they were setting up (putting their blanket down, etc.). They had their 15 week old Boxer with them. The dog was yelping and pulling up his paws. I told her that the sand was too hot for her dog and she should put her dog on the blanket. She said : Oh yeah, never thought of that.

Just goes to show that no matter how obvious things can seem to us, other people don't have a clue.

Something I do is whenever we see another dog that is not tied up, we take Mia in our arms (cuz you just never know). Well, we were at my uncle's cottage and this guy was outside with his Silky Terrier. She was a beautiful dog and when she saw me with Mia, she wanted to see what I had in my arms. The Silky Terrier was trying to get up on my legs, so I bent down just a bit so she could sniff Mia. Well, all of a sudden she started to bite (you could hear her teeth when she closed her mouth). Of course, this Silky didn't have the time to get to Mia cuz I was prepared for this. But could you imagine if Mia was walking next to me when we'd seen this dog? I'm sorry, but if you know your dog doesn't like other dogs, put them on a leash, you never know.

Ahhhh, just had to vent a little!!!

wow my first comment is i have never heard of a silky that is mean they had to of trained it that way or something

second i couldnt walk on sand myself when its hott how could she leave her dog sitting there

some people should not have dogs they need to get there dog undercontrol

Some people are so dense. If it's painful for US to walk on hot sand, what makes a dog any different? It's probably worse for them! I'm glad little Mia was being carried like the adorable baby she is.

Did the owner apologize or was he as ignorant and stupid as most of the other owners of attack dogs?

I know what you mean, Shelley, I took Tucker for his first beach experience this past Saturday and my first concerns were all about him: ice cold fresh water, an umbrella for shade, some food, sunscreen, his little visor to keep sun out of his eyes and even checking to make sure there was some breeze and the temperature was not too horrible. While there, I made sure he stayed cool, hydrated and well away from other, bigger dogs. I live near Daytona Beach, Florida so overheating can be a real issue if you aren't well prepared. I would even periodically put some of the cooler, fresh water on his neck and head to be on the safe side. He loved swimming and had a great, SAFE time on his first trip. We only stayed about an hour and a half and I got a pretty good burn - of course, I wanted to, but just imagine, if he hadn't had shade, sunscreen, hat, etc. When our little ones get wet, their skin is somewhat exposed...I sure didn't want him getting burned!

You are so right! I pick Deegan up if another dog (bigger than he is, which is almost all of them) is coming by us too.
I actually took Deegan to the beach last week, and as we were walking down the pathway, a couple younger guys (around 22-24) were walking with a Rotti. Well I could see from far away that this Rotti perked his ears up and was zeroing in on my baby. So I scooped Deegan up well in advance, and began to walk way around and out to the way, because if that Rotti did want to lunge at him, I wouldn't be able to do much weighing 118lbs myself.

And as I walked by, the guys were like "I think he wants your dog!" In a joking fashion. Well, that didn't impress me one bit! I don't care if they were joking or not! Some people can be so thick and brainless!

About the sand on the feet, I saw somewhere on here cute little sandles for them! Bruce has yet to go to a sand beach, but I cannot wait to take him!!!

Unfortunately, any of the terriers can be "mean" without being taught. The very personality trait that we love in them, when carried even a bit to the extreme, is vicious. I have seen many smaller dogs who have earned their nickname "ankle-biters"..
We have to guard our Yorkie babies as if they were our own human baby..they are vulnerable and they don't know their size so they won't back down,,, that macho thing, I think..LOL

It irritates me when people who know their dog isn't good with other dogs let them offleash. Once, I was at Tunxis with Cailee (they are allowed off-leash on the trails) and my well-trained Cailee is walking along, when all of a sudden this vicious pitbull comes running up to her and *luckily* stops about 10ft away from Cailee and is barking, growling and lunging. Her owner came running up and started yelling at the dog. I just walked away as quickly as possible I was so freaked. He never even appologized.

I always leave Rika on a leash because she can be a brat sometimes to certain dogs and she tries to bite their noses. Lol.

I haven't take Gucci to the beach yet. But I think is common sense that if the sand is hot for us is hot for the pups also. I feel bad for the boxer. Im glad that you told her about it.
Im glad that nothing happened to Mia.
Also I also pick up Gucci everytime I see a bigger dog that I dont know. I always think is best to be safe than sorry. I dont have nothing agiunst big dogs, but If you don't know the dog or the owner Im just over protective.
