| Boy or Girl I have a a boy and a girl. I like my girl cuz she was the easiest to potty train. The boy, not so easy. But on the other hand my boy seems to be the smarter one to train to do commands, and he is the cuddler. So it really depends on the temperament. Anyway good luck! Any one you pick you will fall deeply in love with anyway, so I don't think it really matters. |

| My little Elvis is my first boy dog ever. I had always had girls. I'm glad I went with a boy because he has bonded so tightly with me...I think DH might be a tad jealous.

| Both Boy Yorkies tend to be more independent than girls in my experience and the girls tend to be somewhat more aggressive over territory, food or toys. The girls we have had cuddle a bit more and can be easier to groom - the boys always want to jump out of the bath! I believe dogs are meant to live in packs. We currently have three Yorkies - two girls and one boy. They are extremely happy on both workdays and weekend days - they love to have us home but function extremely well if we are away. My advice is to have at least two Yorkies. One boy and one girl works fine if both are spayed/neutered and a two girl combo can work right as well as long as you step in to control any jealousy. One thing I would NOT advise, however, is to try raising two puppies in the same house at the same time. We went through this with our most recent puppies who are now close to six months old - getting a male and female from the same litter - and it is an overwhelming amount of work. The rewards for raising these two together are obvious - they are bonded well with each other and have a great time playing, which means our older dog (Daisy is 3) does not get run ragged like she would by a single puppy - but everything is more difficult with two puppies in the house because one will start to respond to training and the other will undermine the effort you have made. So, I would suggest raising a puppy to ten months or so and then adding a second puppy of the same or opposite sex. It is helpful to have the first dog spayed/neutered before adding the new friend. For us, three dogs works better than when we just had two. With three, they appear to have developed all the natural pack behaviours that dogs are well documented to benefit from. They are self-sufficient, yet very fun and affectionate with us humans and they are almost always calm and polite. We have no problems with barking, aggression, social skills, grooming, sleeping through the night, jealousy, possessiveness or chewing. A single Yorkie, male or female, tends to become very dependent on the human parent/leader and will often exhibit unwanted behaviours if left alone. If you work every day, make plans for two dogs at least - it is probably in their best interests and makes life a bit easier for you as well. If you are home most days and you want a lap dog who will go everywhere with you, a female Yorkie tends to fit that role a bit better than a male. |

| pebbles is so pretty and was very easy to potty train and i love dressing her up but shes so independant and she does not like to be held much or give kisses.. I just got bam bam and he is a total mommas boy.. follows me around and sleeps on my neck/face, loves to be held and cuddled, kisses me all the time... but he is proving to be hard to train... so its a toss up lol they both have their good qualities. i also agree with the above poster that the girl tends to be the most possessive over food and toys etc. pebbles wants all other dogs things.. dogs that come to visit, etc... she takes their stuff

YT 1000 Club Member | With Roxie it was love at first sight and it wouldn't have mattered if she was a boy or a girl. She's so loving all the time and follows me everywhere I go and would love to be able to go with me each time I leave the house. I can't even go into the bathroom without her! Good luck on your choice. I think you'll love either one the same. |

| When I initially started researching Yorkies, I was convinced that I would get a female. All my animals had been female growing up, and I just never saw myself getting a leg-lifting, toy humping male. A lot of the info I read claimed that female yorkies tend to be a lot more territorial, often choosing one human as "their person" while the little boys tend to be more laid back and get along with everyone. I spoke with one breeder who even said (jokingly) that she'd have all males if she could. Although as some of the above posters have said, I think it's more important to go and see the dogs and pick the puppy you feel you "click" with. Their personalities differ so much from dog to dog that it's hard to generalize and a bad idea to choose a yorkie based on preconceived gender-specific qualities. I'm happy with my little boy ... he is a love bug and he has yet to manifest the behaviors I worried about at the beginning. My mother's female German Spitz, however, LOVES to raise her leg and mark her territory and humps just about anything in sight. Go figure! Last edited by LaPeque; 08-04-2008 at 09:52 PM. |

| It is a very tough decision, but I don't think that you can go wrong with either. They are so precious and steal your heart right away!

| I've had both and I prefer female Yorkies. The males that I had were harder to housebreak and I constantly had to clean then because they peed on themselves. JMO |

| Hmm this is not always accurate. When I went to pick out my yorkie, I ended up choosing the girl who was quiet and shy and clingy at the time. She is 5 months tomorrow and now she is very rambunctious, wild, and not all that much of a cuddler. She is clingy, though, afraid to leave the room without me for more than a minute. So they're not always gonna have the same personality as when they're newborns. (Unless Bailey was foolin me at the breeders and just wanted to fake me out so I would bring her home w/me) haha

| I wanted a girl (so I could buy her a pink rhinestone collar), but ended up with my little boy! When we visited with the breeder I asked which puppy was a "cuddler" and would make a good lap dog. They pointed at the chubby puppy that was sitting quiety by himself chewing on his toy. We chose that one- and now he's my little Wall-E Bear!!! I love him... never thought I would end up with a boy though! |
