Default Thursday is the day...

that Cruiser gets neutered. He'll be 18 weeks on Friday. The little dude only weighed 2 pounds 15 ounces last week. Since he had a reaction to his first set of vaccines (he didn't with the rest and has had them all now), I'm worried about how he'll do with anesthesia. I sure hope they know what they are doing. But we just switched vets to the place the breeder goes so I think they should know about yorkies. How did other people's dogs do after neutering? He doesn't have to spend the night. How long until he's back to his normal self? I'll be worried about him all day on Thursday!

I'm glad you made your visit for Thursday... so if you have any questions the following day, your Vets Office will be open.

I just had Lola spayed and she kept licking her incision when I was not looking. She licked all the glue off and I had to bring her back in to have it fixed. So instead of a big cone on her little head. I put her in a Onesie (Preemie size) that I bought in the baby store. Now she couldn't get to her incision and it stayed clean. I have a photo of her on my page of her in a Onesie. They used glue to close the very small incision when they fixed my male cat also, so I'm sure they will do the same for your boy.
Make sure that you have the option to bring home pain meds (if needed). Although, the males surgery is not as involved as the females. I'm sure it still hurts.
Make sure that you make them aware, that Yorkie's are very sensitive to anesthesia so that they will pay close attention to him during the surgery. My Lola was give pain meds for home use and the dose was to high for her little body (4 pounds). So I lowered it myself until she was out of pain and not completely stoned out of her mind. Then I called my Vets Office and made them write it in her chart, for future references.
The way I knew she was on to much pain meds was, when I gave her the pain meds she just kept getting up and trying to lay down... over and over and over. She kept looking at everything like it was making her dizzy. You will be able to notice if this happens. She look very high! Like the room is spinning.

The day you bring your baby home, it needs to be very quite in your home for him. Think of it as if... you were coming home from the hospital. All you wanted to do was sleep with no interruptions. Most likely he wont want to eat but make sure you give him the option to and give him plenty of water.
You might want to pick up a product called "Nutri-Cal Puppy". It is an excellent product if you have not heard of it. It will keep his nutrition and blood sugar levels up. I always keep a supply of this in the house, because Lola is a picky eater. You can find it at your local pet store. I paid liker $5.00 - $6.00 at PetCo.Oh, ya.... They LOVE it. Here is their web page: TomlynNutri-Cal

You should also think about Micro-Chipping him and having them check his teeth, in case some need to be removed. This way you won't need put him under anesthesia again.
Best of luck!

I am not sure about the neutering, but I will tell you my little Tucker was about a year old and his baby teeth did not fall out and his adult teeth were growing in behind them...I had to take him to the vet and have him put to sleep so the vet could pull 7 baby teeth...I was so nervous..he only wieghed a little over 3 lbs...but he came out of out very well and did great afterwards...I am sure your little baby will be fine....I will pray for him...

Love,
Mary

Thanks! I think I will get some nutrical or ask the vet for a prescription for the a/d because Cruiser is a very picky eater and I need him to eat after his surgery.

Yes, we are getting him microchipped at the same time.

Unfortunately, I have to work so my husband will be taking him and I can't go along. I am going to make sure he asks a few questions though. We haven't trimmed his nails yet so I want the vet to show my husband how. I also want him to ask about flea and tick prevention and if we should be doing that and if so what product he recommends. I don't really want to put the greasy stuff on his fur. Is there a pill that I can give him or something else?

You probably already had this done…but did you have them do a blood work up before they put him under? I know many vets recommend doing that prior to giving any animal anesthesia.

Well this is the vet that the breeder takes her puppies to. He was 2 pounds 15 ounces last week. Maybe he'll have gained an extra ounce and be up to 3 this week. The breeder highly recommended this place so I think they know what they are doing when it comes to yorkies.

Well if your breeder uses them and trusts them, then I would probably trust them too
Good Luck!

That seems awfully early, many people wait till 6-7 months because Yorkies often need to have their baby teeth removed, and this can be done at the time of neutering, otherwise he has to go under anesthesia twice, and this is the most dangerous part of any surgery. Also, if done during neutering, cost is $5-10.00 a tooth, if done separately; it's several hundred dollars. If the permanent teeth come in while milk teeth are still present, it can cause many problems such as a bad bite, and cavities due to food buildup between the two rows of teeth. I would ask my vet about this; however, some vets don't realize how big a problem this is for Yorkies. I've read many people say they wished they had waited, and got it all done at once.

I hope your little Cruiser recovers from surgery nicely. Let me know how he is doing.

First of all "Nutri-Cal Puppy" can be bought at the "Pet Store" and as far as flea and tick prevention, I use them for my 2 cats and my little Lola. My cats are indoors only, so I use the "Frontline Top Spot" which is less expensive. For Lola, I use the "Frontline Plus" because she is always coming and going from the house. It's a bit more money, but worth it. Yorkies have sensitive skin to flea bites and sometimes will develop skin problems from fleas. The cheaper products you can buy at the supermarket, do leave the hair very oily. But as far as the Frontline & Advantage products they will not if apply correctly.
The way I apply it, is to part the hair at the base of the skull and neck. Poor the liquid only on the skin slowly, trying not to get it on the hair. Don't rub... let it dry without touching for a full day. Don't brush the hair in that spot until it's completely dry (about 1-1/2 days). Then the hair wont be oily.
Ask your Vet what size/dose you should use for your size/age of baby.

Good Luck and I will check in with you this evening to see how your baby is doing. I'm on my way to a Car Show so I will be gone for a couple of hours.

Cruiser is doing fine. When we first got him home he was a little wobbly on his feet but he is walking around now and was even eating a little bit. He seems to be doing pretty good.

That's good to hear. Joey felt better in a couple of days. No jumping!

He was playing with his Kong last night. He is licking a little bit this morning. I don't think it's excessive. It's not constant. I just tell him "no lick". I'm thinking about the onsie that someone suggested rather than the cone. I don't want him to have to wear a cone on his head. He ate this morning and we gave him some pain meds. He was crying about 5:00 and I think the pain meds from yesterday had worn off.
