| Scared to death to swim!!! Hey everyone. I have a little yorkie who is a little over a year old and we love to take her hiking and fishing and she loves the adventure...believe it or not she is very curious of the fish! She is up for just about anything if it involves adventure and the outdoors...except...when it comes to water! She sees a body of water (meaning any sort of pool, river, lake, pond, etc) and runs as far away from it as possible. We have tried everything to get her used to being around water and even playing in very shallow water but she won't have any of it! We are going to the ocean soon and want to be able to take our little baby, but I am so afraid that she will HATE it. She has this unhealthy fear of water...but yet she does fine with her bath, a little trembling when she is cold but mostly she does good. so....I need some advice. I really want to get her to not be scared of water and even be able to play in it sometimes but I just don't know where to start! I have even thought about buying a little puppy life jacket, any suggestions??? PLEASE HELP! |

| I was just going to suggest getting her a life jacket and practicing in a warm pool, if you have access to one. Or even fill up a kiddie pool and play with her in that. Check out this post......it has links to tiny life jackets. http://www.yorkietalk.com/forums/my-...t-i-found.html

| I would suggest getting a little life jacket and having her wear it at home on and off to get used to it first. Then little by little as you are bathing her, pour water all over her with a pitcher. Then try to put her jacket on while bathing her and fill up the water so she has to paddle. That is a good idea to get a baby pool. Good luck! We found our life vest at Petco.

| thanks for all the advice, I will have to try and work with her in a more controlled setting like that. We have just been taking her to places with opportunities to swim to hopefully get her used to the idea. It sounds like the baby pool thing may work! Oh...and I need a super tiny life jacket, she is only 3 lbs, know where I can find one that small? |

| Dixie and Teddy are just little. We have a pool in our backyard, but don't want them getting in that yet... so we got them a little baby wading pool at Petsmart. (or you can get one at Toys R US or Walmart) We put about 3 or so inches of water in it, and they mostly play by jumping in and out of it, but they still have a good time. I am hoping by the time they are a little bigger to get in the pool they won't be scared of it... A little lifejacket would be adorable! And would be a great safety idea for the beach. Those waves can get really strong and may be able to carry her away if she gets in too far. |
