Please, everyone, make sure your Yorkie is tagged on the 4th of July. it is the most sure way to get your little one back if he/she runs away. My Edie always wears a tag on a collar. She wears a harness when on leash--the collar is simply to hold her tag.

I know some of you don't like collars and tags, but I believe the benefits will far outweigh any inconveniences that you have with them. Especially at this time of year.

This is Roxi's (11 1/2 months) and Rocco's (4 1/2 months) first 4th of July... I don't get off work until 6pm, and we normally go to a bunch of 4th of July parties, but I am staying in with my babies.. I have some valum that was perscribed for Roxi after her spay which I didn't use. Think I should split one between them? Or Rescue Remedy? Or just see how they do? Advice would be great!!

The only thing I can advice is that if your going to give them a drug that will make them drunk like do Not leave them unattended or if you do need to put them on the floor. They will try to follow you and in jumping off from where they are at that time they can brake a leg from the unstable condition they are in.

What a great, thoughtful post. Thanks, Alison. Eddie is among the victims of past Fourths. He ran away one time when I was out of town and my mother-in-law was dogsitting. He made it home on his own after 4 hours, but he has been terrified of fireworks ever since.

A tip for those who do have scaredy-cats: Don't baby them. Try to distract them, but ignore the behavior if they hide. Comforting them tells them that it's OK to be afraid.

Maya is not afraid either ... thank God .... but our Thunderstorms are nothing compered to a Tornado or a Hurricane ..... so we will have to see ....

Lisa that is what I did with Izzy. We got her last Memorial weekend and when the 4th rolled around I took her outside and even to a fireworks display in our area (quite a few to be exact). I held her (she was harnessed) and we talked softly to her and sang. Same with the thunder...we sort of made a game out of it.

Now this year..lol...every time someone blows off a firecracker in the area she starts to bark and wants to go outside to investigate.

For those of you with young pups, don't assume they will be afraid of the fireworks. My Edie was afraid of NOTHING when she was young. So, in my opinion, using drugs is not necessarily the way to go unless you know they will have a problem.

Mike is right....distracting them is the way to go. Edie is very afraid of thunder, but if I start playing ball with her, she is ready to go, and she forgets all about the thunder.

Yes, I agree with this, don't baby them or they will feel like there is something to be afraid of. Babying them reinforces the "scared" behavior.

We found a dog several years ago while visited some friends on the forth. The dog was panting and his tongue was reaching the ground. It was really hot, and I didn't want to leave this little guy on the busy street. I took him home, and thankfully he was wearing tags, the owner wasn't home at the time, and gave us a call in the morning. So tags are really good idea.

This is Cooper's first 4th and we will be at a rental house. I haven't decided if I will bring him with me to watch the fireworks (where it will be loud) or leave him in a strange house (where the noise will not be as noticeable).

Since he is a pretty tough little guy, I will probably bring him along.

Im thinking about bringing mine and keeping her in the doggie purse. We will be sitting by our car so if she gets scared I can put her in the crate in the car.

I think my dog is weird. Shes very attracted to noise. When I vacuum, she jumps on the top of the vacuum and barks at it. Then some kids across the street were lighting off those little firecrackers. She just sat at the edge of the yard wagging her tail.

I don't think this has much to do with "toughness", dog's hearing is much more intense than ours, I personally would leave him at the house, in a crate that he feels safe in, but if you do decide to take him, I hope you heed the warnings of others, and have tags, on him. They have been known to jump out of your arms when frightened.

I COMPLETELY agree, it's got a lot to do with their intense hearing... I personally am more than willing to sacrifice going out on the 4th to stay home with my babies to insure they are feeling comfortable and safe!! Anyway, theres a ton of drunkies out!!! Better at home BBQ'in!!
