Default Fireworks!!!

Just as it happens every year, last year we had a YT yorkie run away due to 4th of July fireworks. I don't recall who it was, but I think there was a happy ending (or I hope so, anyway).

Please, everyone, make sure your Yorkie is tagged on the 4th of July. it is the most sure way to get your little one back if he/she runs away. My Edie always wears a tag on a collar. She wears a harness when on leash--the collar is simply to hold her tag.

I know some of you don't like collars and tags, but I believe the benefits will far outweigh any inconveniences that you have with them. Especially at this time of year.

Thanks,

I was gonna start a thread similar to this to remind everyone to take special care if your babies are scared of fireworks.
Make sure you have your doors gated off if they are bolters.
Everyone have a safe and happy holiday!!

if your dog is really bad with fireworks please ask your vet for sedatives to calm them down not knock them out. acepromazine is the most popular. ideally you should starting giving the meds the day before if you know its going to be bad. hopefully they won't get too freaked.

be sure you have a close watch on your dogs. i've seen way too many dogs come in thru emergency because of firework related incidents. Dogs will jump out windows no matter what floor they are on if they want out bad enough.

I have been concerned about this too. Suzi is just 4 months old, and it will be her first fourth of July Experience. She only goes outside with me though, and will NOT be anywhere near them . I just will hate to see her so frightned by the noise though. I know the noise hurts their ears terribly.

We will be home and inside. This is Holly's first 4th. I plan to make it a nice one for her. Both girls are chipped, and wear collars with tags when out and about.

I just posted a thread about thunder, 2 of my babies freak out when they hear thunder, I didn't know it's gets that bad that they might try to get away and end up seriously hurting themselves. I am on the first floor so I don't know if I should worry about that or not but they do hide and they won't come out even long after the storms are over I think thunder is traumatizing them and we've had thunder storms like back to back up here so should I be worried about that? I didn't think their fear of thunder was that serious.

This is also Bella's first 4. She will be 15 weeks on Sat so I'm not sure how she is going to handle all the fireworks. We always have a HUGE blowout for the 4th and tons of fireworks. Bella is getting microchipped when she's spayed in Sept so I am planning on keeping her in the house.

Bella freaks out REALLY bad during thunderstorms and tries to hide under anything she can find, so do you think I should ask my vet for a sedative for her or just keep her in the house with the really little kids that won't be outside either because of the fireworks. I am not sure about sedating her as that will open a whole lot of other worries for me.

Thanks-

My oldest Buffy 11 yrs old gets very scare of fireworks and I usually just stay in my bedroom with Buffy and giver her Children's Benadryl to take the edge off but not put her out. I have given her pills from the vets in the pass and it is sooooo dangerous and sad to see them drunk like that I don't do that any more. Oh and Buffy is a mean drunk too....lol

I would say that in the last 4 years I have heard of at least one dog have a heart attack because of the fireworks, and this scares me so much because Buffy has a heart murmur and takes meds...... so we'll see how this year goes. You all have a good and safe 4th Of July!!!!

Now that scares me because Lucy shakes so bad when there are thunder storms...I'm definitely going to ask my vet about childrens benadryl if he thinks it will be okay to give Lucy some I definitely do not want her to have a heart attack.

Jasmine is petrified of fireworks and thunder and I live in SW Fla so we have thunderstorms this time of year so she gets freaked adn they have already started fireworks, when I take her out she keeps her harness and leash on and then I put the collar on her with her tags just in case, I try to wait for hubby to take her out if I possibly can for some reason she just feels safe with him in those situations Please everyone be careful this year!!

I got Bella just before the first of the year. So, for New years eve, I took her outside and sang to her and cuddled her in my lap during the fireworks.
I also did this in the spring when the thunder storms started.
Now she is not afraid of either. I had a friend who found her yorkie dead in a closet when they came home after a bad bad storm.
That dog always had such a hard time with storms
I vowed to do what ever i could to prevent that happening to Bella.
So far so good!!

I think your advice on collars, tags, & harnesses is good advice. I have 2 Yorkies in the family, mine (Meika) & my daughters (Kylan). They both have tags, collars, & we use a harness. I also heardon the news the other day that dogs hearing is so much better than ours and fire crackers sound like bombs to them.

Default I had a "stroke of genius" ... or at least ...

I hope it works!! Toto isn't nearly as bad as lots of pets when they hear thunder or fireworks. Tango, one of my friend's Yorkies, is mortified ... it's heartbreaking! When I bathe Toto, I put earplugs in her ears to keep the water out ... sometimes I forget to take them out right away and when Patrick comes in, instead of running to him, she just stays curled up! She doesn't hear a sound ... so ... we're gonna try earplugs when the fireworks start! Hopefully it will work and poor little Tango won't get so upset. It just breaks my heart because he is just inconsolable!

Good Idea

We might just try that with Essie. Bella is completly ok with load noises, But I just get Essie, so I dont know how she will handle it. She is 16 weeks old and is think it is to much for her I will just take her home. My mom only live about 1/2 mile out of town so I'll just take her there untill the fireworks are over!

Every PLEASE be safe and have a GREAT 4th!!!!!

I stay in with my dogs and turn up music when the fire works start. It helps and I keep them distracted. It is the same with New Years eve.

I take them out around 7 PM and that is it for the night.

It is way too scary for them to be out and hear the load noises.
