No, actually it's not obvious; some people are against any company that does any animal testing what so ever, they don't understand the difference.

OK, point taken. I meant to ME it was obvious. I thought that commented was meant for me, not as a general statement. I misunderstood...my apologies.

I completely agree with you and I had never looked at it that way. I've alway preferred AKC simply because they are the most reputable IMO even though I don't agree with everything they do- they are the best option to me. What I had never considered is when breeders register litters with these alternative registries, they really are supporting stolen breeding rights in a way, since most of these registries came about to circumvent AKC rules. Great point!

ETA- To clarify, I am not vilifying every breeder who registers with AKC alternatives. I don't think they are all intentionally doing something wrong but maybe just haven't considered what they are supporting.

Registration or lack of registration does not make a pet any better or worse. The love it gives to its owner is the real value of a pet. No paper can make it worth any more or less to its adoring owner.

There is always going to be people that breed just to reproduce and make money whether the dogs are AKC registered or APRI (ACA, CKC, or whatever registery is convenient) What the breeder needs to be thinking of though is does the pairing try to create a puppy that fits the standard of that breed or just any "purebred" puppy regardless of what the standard says?

APRI will NOT register mix breeds. You are wrong! Call them and ask.

Well, as I stated earlier.. I did raise yorkiepoos at one time. I did register them with APRI. (Maybe they could have changed? It has been several years.)
APRI also registers cats. While they do have dog shows, they are a Pet Registry, as their name says.

APRI was founded by commercial breeders and has major ties with big businesses, and this means puppy mills. This link says that, "APRI - AMERICA'S PET REGISTRY INC. Advertises free registration for commercial breeders. Non Profit 'dedicated to the preservation of the professional pet industry', dogs and cats. I would venture to guess it's because the other alternative registries...aren't recognized outside of the US and/or aren't international.

I would guess it's because it's they aren't "accepted" as a legitimate club, except by the breeders who use them.
