| Lifting leg when he pees? The other day me & my husband were talking about Bear & why he doesn't lift his leg when he pees. He always squats lol, & I always thought that male dogs lift their leg when they pee?!? My husband said that male dogs lift their legs to pee if they see other dogs doing it & that it's a learned behavior, not an innate one. Do your boy dogs lift their leg when they pee or do they squat? Is this normal for him to be squatting instead of lifting his leg? Amy

| How old is he? Franklin squatted until about 5 months, I think. Then he lifted his leg. I'm not sure what makes them do it...

| If he is only 9 weeks old, he will continue to squat until he is about 5 months old. If you neuter him early he may never lift his leg to pee. My 7 month old yorkie does both....not sure how he decides if he is going to lift his leg or squat but he usually squats if he isn't around anything to lift his leg on and if there is a plant or something then he lifts his leg. Your little guy is so young and tiny....he has lots of growing to do before he will have the strength and the agility to lift his little leg.

| I don't think watching other dogs has anything to do with it. Some do and some don't. Sunnie has always lifted his leg after about 8 months old. Beamer on the other hand is over 13 months and he watches Sunnie all the time.. But he has NEVER lifted his leg.

| You have so much to look forward too! It's SO funny watching them learn how to do it. Dougal thought he'd mastered it and threw his leg up with reckless abandon, overbalanced and fell on his back! Dixie also cocks her little leg. We have a little griffin cross friend who was about five months and hadn't cocked his leg til he went for a walk with Dougal, who led by example!

| Rigger is 2 yrs. old and he does both. I think sometimes he is just tired and it is easier to squat!

| Lifting is not a learned behavior. They lift their leg to direct the spray when they are marking with the urine. Rambeau only does it when he finds a dandy piece of grass to mark, otherwise he squats. Bigger dogs seem to do it most every time but I still catch my three year old labs squatting if they are just in the middle of the yard. Melissa and Rambeau (It has to be just the right piece of grass!) |

| Slade is over a year and he still squats, he has sisters and hasn't really been around male dogs all that much. He did lift his leg one time btwn 4-5 months and I immediately went inside and called to schedule to get him neutered! I've seen him do it maybe twice since then, but 99.9% of the time he squats.
