Lifting is not a learned behavior. They lift their leg to direct the spray when they are marking with the urine. Rambeau only does it when he finds a dandy piece of grass to mark, otherwise he squats. Bigger dogs seem to do it most every time but I still catch my three year old labs squatting if they are just in the middle of the yard.
