It is storming really bad where I am at and Jasmine is like freaking out and I can't get her to calm down and I don't know what to do, please help!!

OMG i dont know what to say or how to help you. Could u not put her in her crate with a blanket over to try and keep her calm?? i dont know if that is good advice or not. your poor little furbaby. i hope someone can help you. ~hugs~

Are you freaking out too? We don't have many storms here, but I know dogs can pick up your mood. You might try putting the crate in the quietest place in the house or turning up the TV. I know the pet store sells certain "scents" that are said to have a calming effect, and you might want to have one of them around for the next time. Is there anyway to distract her?

If you are nervous or upset about the storm then Jasmine is probably reflecting your anxiety. I would just relax and act "normal". Jasmine might do better in a quiet dark place -- maybe you could wrap her in a blanket and go sit in a dark closet -- try singing to her or praying - or just talking to her in a calming tone of voice.

If this continues I'd check with the vet about medications that will help calm her down during storms.

I'm not nervous about the storm I was taking a nap ( I can sleep through a train coming through..lol) and she came and jumped on me and was shaking adn that was what woke me up, the thundering stopped so she is ok now but will not leave my side which is usually normal after the storm, I tried sitting in my closet with the door closed and a radio on ( I have satellite so it is in and out

) and she just continued to shake and she just has to be by my side, it's just wierd she only does this if she smells smoke or there is a thunderstorm but nothing I do really helps her she just stays by mine or hubbys side, I had her wrapped in her favorite blanket and I just got up to get my soda and move it close to me and she freaked, I don't know if something happened when she was a puppy? I only got her at 9 months old and the other people neglected her, I have a funny feeling that even when it stormed outside they would keep her on their porch (they make me angry) I think I might take her to the vet, I just hate to see her like that it worrys me, it's almost like and anxiety attack??

Poor baby!

I think with time, attention and patience it will get better. It wouldn't hurt to consult a vet, but I would try to work it out without medication at first UNLESS it is so bad that she might hurt herself. I would be VERY careful taking her out to potty or anything during a storm. Sometimes they freak out and run away and become disoriented. I would hate for that to happen.

well she is now 2 1/2 so I have had her for almost 2 years and is hasn't gotten better and I don't want to put her on medication I would love to find something that I can do to soothe her, she hates walking in wet grass so when it storms or is wet outside I have to put a potty pad down for her lol, she goes out there and is like umm...mom it is wet outside...lol I just don't like that she pants really heavily and her little hearts beats quicker that's what worries me...

1. Do not baby her or attempt to calm her by baby talking, cuddling or carrying her around.

2. Act as if there is not a storm going on. DO the same things you normally do.

3. See if you can divert her attention with play, and if so give her a treat for giving you her attention.

Once this storm passes, you need to start desentizing her to the sound, so that this will be less likely to happen again.

I am a behaviorist, and you can pm me and I will walk you through the steps to get her past this. It can be done. I'm sorry that things are so chaotic right now. Just trust me when I say DO NOT attempt to calm her by doting on her. If you do, you will only be telling her that her behavior is acceptable, and she will continue to act this way, or worsen, as she is exposed to more storms.

It will be hard, but for her best interest, please act as if nothing is going on. Do what you normally do.

Excellent post, the soothing that we try to do just reinforces the feeling that they should be feeling anxious. It is so hard not to do this, but what you do this time, sets the stage for future behavior.
