| Adopting a year old Yorkie, need advice! First post here, so I hope I picked the right category to put this in! We are considering adopting a 14 month old Yorkie from a local breeder. My daughter and I have visited once and my husband and I are going back on Sunday. I would love some advice on what I should look for, and questions I should ask. On my first visit, he just sat calmly in my lap and let me pet him...he also was fine with my daughter. This is our first dog so I am really at a loss... Thanks in advance for taking the time to reply to my oh so broad question! |

| welcome to YT! I adopted my 2 when they were 2, and was nervous about taking in someone else's dogs, but it has been a wonderful 4 yrs Do you know why the breeder is letting him go at this age? Since you are dealing with a breeder, will she offer you a health guarantee? Have you researched yorkies to know that this a good bred for your family and will fit your lifestyle? They really need lots of interaction and human contact

| I don't want to scare you, but you should really check out the breeder and how/where she keeps the dogs. I've heard a couple of people that had gotten dogs that hadn't bred well from the breeder, but since they were raised in small cages, they were impossible to housebreak and although they were rather calm, they would not play or really interact with people. Hopefully the dog you're looking at was treated well! You should really check with your vet to see if they can give you the warning signs of a mistreated dog. |

| I got Rosie as a retired 5 year old girl from a breeder. She has been absolutely fantastic! Absolutely the sweetest personality I've ever seen in a dog and she gets along GREAT with Amelia (our 1 year old)! So far, we've had no accidents. I think it helps to have Amelia to show her what to do.

| I dont' know much about adopting an older pup but I wanted to welcome you to YT. But i would go with your gut. Did the place seem nice? The dog seemed friendly and not timid? Do you know why she is adopting her out at this age as opposed to keeping her? Does she look well taken care of? How big is the dog? Hopefully all of the potty training issues will have already been taken care of for you Good luck! |

| I adopted my maltese at 7 months of age and while she was not quite a yr old, some people still consider that an "older pup." She has been an absolute delight and fits in perfectly with our family. I love her so much!! Is she well socialized? Does she get along with other people? other dogs? Good luck!! Post pictures when you can

Donating YT 30K Club Member | Welcome. I got Pixie at 13 months from a reputable breeder who was going to keep her for herself but decided to let her go. She was a little harder to housebreak because she was kept in a run in the basement with the other puppies and adults. But aside from that I knew exactly what I was getting (I love her look), she had been spayed, she fit right in with my other 2 dogs as she had been raised with others. She was able to sleep on my bed from the beginning and slept thru the night. I really prefer the older pups. I got Roxie at 4 months and although she has fit in well, she still is a puppy. I would go with your gut feelings. If she has been raised in the house and is trained I would think it would be great. Good luck

| An update from original poster! We spent a wonderful hour and a half with him yesterday and are really leaning towards making him part of our family. His temperament seems to be a perfect match for us! Now I have a new question...is it reasonable to ask the breeder for a "trial week" to make sure that he will be a good fit? I just worry about taking him from his home with mommy and sister...I am 99% confident he will be great after a few days with us, but what if its a disaster? Has anyone done this before? Thanks again for all the great advice! |

| I've never heard of doing a trial week, but when I adopted my 2 at age 2, I was very anxious about it. The problem is, the first few days can be an adjustment period potentially anyway, and it may be hard to tell in a week's time. Or on the other hand you may have no adjustment issues. I would talk with the breeder about your concerns for adjustment and see what she has to say and what recommendations she would make

| Second update! Wish I knew how to update the thread title...I'll have to read about that! But we talked with the breeder today and everything is arranged. As of Sunday, "Thor" will be with us for a trial week, and if all goes as well as I am confident it will, my 5 yr old human daughter will no longer be an only child! My only concern is how hard it will be for him to be away from his mommy and sister, but hopefully the one-on-one attention he will get from us will ease that pain. I'll post a new thread with homecoming pictures on Sunday!! |

| congrats -- hope it all goes well during your trial run. I don't believe there is anyway to change your title - I too wanted to do that one time when I panicked about a sick dog -- you can always start a new thread
