| Collapsed Trachea My ~just about 3 year old~ Yorkie Chelsie just had surgery last week for a severe collapsing trachea. Her larynx was paralyzed as a complication of the surgery, and she had a second surgery to permanently tie back one side of her Larynx. Has anyone had a Yorkie who has gone through the tracheal surgery? It is so hard to gage her healing progress. The doctors give you "some" idea of what is to be expected...but I wish I had more support. Kara |

| Oh you poor thing, I feel for you. It is so hard when something serious happens and the first surgery isn't a complete success. Thank God that you have a vet that seems to be on top of these type surgeries. These forums are great for venting purposes and anytime you need moral support tho |

| This does make a good support group, sorry I have no experience for you, but they seem so very frail when they are sick. I hope she gets better very quickly. Welcome to YT and keep us updated on Chelsie.

| Awwww, that is terrible! I don't have any experience with that either (thank God). I sure hope someone can get on here and tell you what to expect. I sure hope all goes well and she has a speedy recovery without any complications! What happened that caused this? I know their throats are very sensitive and that Yorkies are prone to collapsing tracheas. |

| OHHHHH, so sorry about your and your baby's problem. I do not know personally all of the complications of the surgery BUT I do know that the food the dog eats has to be very specific to each individual dog. Since a portion of the structure that prevents food from going into the lungs and directing it to the stomach, has been altered, aspiration is one worry. Would you share with us the symptoms and what was so severe that the vet thought this was the best treatment. Was she going into heart failure or something?? AND, I am asking only for the info because I am interested not because I want to start a discussion that can be very sad for you.. I have read that there is a doc in PA at the vet school who is working to perfect a stint that can be inserted into the trachea so that it stays open and the larynx does not have to have the disfiguring surgery..He is also working with a human anesthesiologist to perfect stints for PSS. I do pray for a fast recovery of your baby..PLEASE keep posting so we can follow Chelsie's progress. |

| You poor thing . I feel for you . I have been there . But mine was a little different . I lost my little sweetpea on new years day . Her trachea was collapsing. But when I took her to the doctor that was to do her surgery . It was found that the collapsing was caused by a huge cyst that had her air way 95% blocked . She had 2 surgerys . The first one they tried to just drain the cyst . But before we took her out of the office she was already having trouble breathing . A few day later she had another surgery . She made it through . But died after everyone left her alone in the office . Her throat swelled shut . I would say just keep an eye on her . And if you have any concerns,or if she seems to be worse call your vet .

| Cheyenne, that is so sad. I cannot imagine how you managed that sadness. Your baby sounds so loved and maybe she is giving all that love to someone across Rainbow Bridge. |

| Thank you for your kind words . Sweetpea was an amazing friend . It was very sad to have lost her . It still hurts . But having her sister penny helps. I feel that sweetpea is with my friend walt who died just 2 days before her. He loved her very much .FYI /You should always ask your vet if your dog will be alone after surgery . Picture of sweetpea...my bestest friend. By the way whispersmom i love your dogs . They are beautiful !

I am so sorry Chelsie is having a difficult time after her shurgery too. I have little yorkies so I worry all the time that one of them may develop this condition. I hope for a speedy and full recovery for her. The news shared about the inventions and new advances in this area sounds hopeful too. | |

| Collapsed Trachae So sorry for Chelisia. My yorkie had some honking type coughs that come and go. Sometimes when he gets too excited. It goes away very quickly. I massage his trachea when it happens. So far he has not chocked on his food. My vet says that the surgery is the last resort with questionable results. I am interested how the collapse developed over time. What were your first symptoms and how did it develop so fast. My prayers are with you. Thanks for keeping us informed. Don Bowles |

| Cheyanne, thank you for your compliments on my babies. If I had not had them, Jesse's death would have been totally unbearable. They do help us in our grief whether we have lost a human or an animal. I LOVE THESE GUYS!!!!! |
