Please Help, I am desperately trying to crate train my yorkie tiny puppy that I got last week. He is only 1 pound, but makes more noise than I have ever heard any animal make, whenever he is put in his crate. He is getting so loud that we are afraid the neighbors will complain. He cried top volume for 6 hours last night until we couldnt stand it anymore and had to let us sleep with him. Does anyone have any advice? I tried putting a treat in there, putting it right next to the bed, in a seperate room, everything but nothing seems to work.

Also, his breath is REALLY bad, any advice on that one too? Thank you

Welcome to YT, you will find a wealth of info here. 1lb, wow that's small. I can't imagine how loud (or not) he could be, LOL. I have used this trick and it works perfectly with my pup: rinse out a coke can. Drop in about 10 pennies and everytime he barks, shake it at him. At 1lb and a baby I wouldn't rattle it at full stealth because you might give him a heart attack! But everytime Chewy yapped in his crate or xpen I did this and we have no more problems. Good luck.

BTW, how old is your baby? Please post pics.

How old is he? At such a young age (still puppy) there breath should not stink...Maybe try putting something that smells like you in the crate with him and a towel or blanket to cover the sides so it feels more secure for him, also he cannot be expected to hold his bladder for long epriod sof timeas a baby so be preapred to open the crate and let him out to do his business every 1-2 hours!!..Good Luck

it was recommended to me by my groomer, that also raises yorkies. Put a ticking clock, one you can actually hear, in a sock and put that along with a plush toy in the crate with your baby. The sound and softness makes him think he's with his litter mates. I swear it works with my baby! He goes right to sleep, wakes up to pp, and right back to sleep.

I would put him in the crate...sleep near or next to it where you can reassure him but leave him in there.

Yeah, we tried putting stuff that smells like us in there. he is so small I am afraid he is going to have an anxiety attack being in there. I cant figure out how to post a picture of him on here. He is 9 weeks old, we only got him last week. yeah his breath is REALLY bad, we bought him one of those tooth brush treats but it doenst seem to be working.

Put him in his crate a few times during the day, start with 10 minutes, next time go to 15 minutes, and so on.. He will get use to it!

I can't imagine that he will be "that" loud to be able to disturb the neighbors. Given that he is so young, bring him out to pee every few hours. I really don't think he can hold his bladder for 6 hours at that young age...

HAHA...aww he's discovering his voice. If you can avoid giving in to him, do!! Otherwise he will know that if he barks long and loud enough, he will get his way. Coco did this by crying and whinning all night for 3 weeks. I just ignored her and after 3 weeks she got the hint.

I am trying, but hes so tiny I am afraid hes going to have a heart attack, he cries like hes dying and my boyfriend and I jsut cant take it.

Does anyone know if you can use human toothpaste and shampoo on dogs? I dont think you can but I am just checking

wow He is very young, I would agree with the others, try just putting him in there 15-20 minutes at a time. and being so small he will pee often . As for the bad breath Is this Puppy breath that you are smelling? All puppies have a strog puppy breath, Some people like the smell and others think its gross. But all puppys Have a certin smell to their breath. It's Just puppy breath.

You'll hear different advise from everyone. I've tried it all with my little guy. He is now 8 months old and he is not in a crate. I tried crate training using the following methods for at least 1 month each:

1) Ignore them
2) Put a blanet over the crate
3) Put a small alarm clock in the crate - ticking sound reminds them of mommy
4) Saying NO BARK and ignoring him afterwards
5) Spraying him with water ever time he barked

Like I said, I tried these ALL for at least one month each and I was consistent. They didn't work! Not to disappoint you, but my point is, you'll have to try different things to see what works. If your puppy is very young (8-12 weeks) the crying is normal. Give it time. I eventually gave up since nothing worked and I was sick of not sleeping. Now he sleeps were he wants in the house and wakes me up every day at 5:30 (which is annoying) but I'll have to get used to it eventually because he is not going anywhere!

My my, I'm a little surprised such a tiny dog was sold to you at 9 weeks, a lot of breeders will keep them longer to be sure they are ready to go to their forever homes. Anyway, you might call the breeder and find out what type of bedding he was in before and try the same kind. A soft blanket, favorite toy and even somehow making his bedding very warm (hot water bottle, well padded heating pad on low, low low?) might work. Make sure any cord isn't within his chewing reach. As everyone mentioned, you will have to make arrangements for him to get to a pee pad or take him out about every hour, so it could be a potty issue too. Do you have food and water available at night? That's a must for little ones, as you probably know. I fully expected both Chloe and Lacey to cry for a few days but they did not. I handled them as puppies a lot, face, paws, tummy, ears, maybe trying that will give him the comfort he needs. I know it breaks your heart and tries your nerves, good luck.
