| Pao's Annual Vet Check We went to see a new vet on Friday recommended by friends. We ended up doing a heartworm test and a complete blood test. We will be doing a fecal test soon. The vet is very pleased on Pao's overall physical condition. Then we started to talk about vaccinations and diet. Of course, as usual he recommends annual vaccines except for rabies (every 3 years) and food (kibbles) from the vet. The vet actually stands behind big companies such as Purina, Science Diet and states that they employ nutrionists with Phd to come up with the food. If so, why would my baby prefer fresh food over kibbles/canned food? Looking at my baby enjoying healthy homecooking and not having to eat it just because he is hungry, I politely said no and another no to annual vaccines. He is looking so good and has so much energy. I really do not want to under-vaccinate but certainly not over-vaccinate. I wanted to do a titer test but I cannot afford it. He told me titer costs $200 each!

| Okay, looking back at what I have posted, I really have not much of a point in writing it and its jumping here and there on the vaccination and dietary issues. Basically just wanted to write out the experience I had at the vet and a short discussion on vaccinations and dietary. Of course he had seen a lot of Parvo, distemper and other diseases when it was rampant 20 years ago when he just started out as a vet and vaccination is one of the ways in reducing the diseases but I still do not want to over-vaccinate my baby and he had his puppy shots and we will be doing it again once every 3 years so I believe it is sufficient for my little guy. I wonder what your vet recommended?

| good for you for standing up for Pao. i sometimes find it hard because i know the vet knows more than i do (generally speaking) but i too feel firmly about my beliefs. Layla was not vaccinated for Lepto this year and never will be and was not given the shot for Bordetella. She had to have her rabies as it is law here and she had her annual vaccine. She does not need anything else for 3 years at which point i might not get her booster and she will just have her dreaded rabies. |

| I enjoyed reading your post. Chipper needs an update on his vacs, so I am interested in what others have to say on the subject. Thank you.

| I agree, good for you!!! I think we are over vaccinating our babies, too. I, too, am interested in what others have to say on this subject.

| Wow! $200 for a titer test? A titer for Distemper and Parvo costs around $60 for both here. Good for you for being able to say no... Fortunately I'm able to do titers, but if I couldn't, I wouldn't automatically vaccinate my kids any more often than every 3 years. |
