| Home from vet Hi everyone! We are back from the vet. He had a full examination with the exception of bloodwork. No parasites in his stool, just alot of pollen and twigs. She thinks he may have ate something outside that upset his tummy. She didn't feel it was the heartworm pill. I was telling the vet that I would have to sweep the sidewalk before letting Barclay out for a walk because he picks everything up, rocks, twigs, paper. I am constantly sweeping things out of his mouth. She suggested that he may have "pica" which is craving everything and anything that is not food. He does well in the house although I have hardwood floors and I vacuum and dust the floors regularly, so theres not much to munch on. But he does go along the perimeter of the room sniffing and licking anything up that is on the floor. Have any of you had a pup with pica. My vet suggested a mask for outdoor trips. The kind that they have at PetSmart. She said he is at risk of developing an obstruction if I don't catch everything he puts in his mouth. Have any of you used the mask? Did your pups grow out of this habit? I feel so bad because he enjoys outside so much. I have tried bringing toys, balls, everything outside to divert his attention from flying objects, dandelions, rocks and papers, but nothing works. I hate to have to use the mask, but if it means his health I am going to do it. Any suggestions??? Or words of encouragement that he will grow out of this in the future? Thanks and I am staying home to watch him all day, she gave me a special diet called Hills Prescription Diet i/d. Have any of you used that when your babies were sick. Sorry so long, just a fretful mom with a first time illness. I feel like when my kids were babies, I wish we had BabieTalk back in the day, wow, it would have been great to talk with other moms and dads! LOL |

| my thoughts are this..first, a puppy will explore their enviorment by sniffing and biting (and eating things) and they do grow out of that when they decide what is edible. Is he teething? Maybe he is looking for something to soothe his gums. Third, if it was me, I would get him a bone. A big uncooked bone to chew on. Fourth, if it is pica I would determine which vitamin or mineral he needs and make sure he gets it to stop the pica.

| Thanks for the ecouraging words and suggestions! Thank you for the encouraging words and suggestions! Yes, he is almost 4 months old and he is teething. I have read on these posts that a lot of Yorkies are chewing up walls, furniture and carpet and even a dead bird!!! So I guess it is just teething and hopefully he will grow out of it. He is sound asleep beside me, still hasn't ate anything since he vomitted. I agoing to try around 1:00PM. Letting his belly settle first. I will keep you posted how the special diet goes, just in case some of you go through the same thing with your puppies, I hope you don't have this trouble!!! |

| Oops, forgot to ask about the bone Do you mean a shank bone from the grocery store. I tried one of those stuffed natural bones from petmart, but they are too big and that stuffing can't be great for them. I would love to get him a real beef bone, but are you suppose to boil it first? |

| Cooked bones can splinter. Give him a large uncooked bone that he cannot get in his mouth. Marrow bones are good but clean out the marrow first. Ham bones are good if you can get them. I can buy bones locally that are made for chewing. My baby wasn't fooled by plastic bones etc from Petsmart but loves raw bones. I give it to him and then put it away on the fridge after washing it off. I give it back the next day. My big dogs absolutely love them too. There is a thread in the FOOD forum about bones for yorkies. Try that and I hope it works. He needs something to chew on and I'll bet that is why he is eating evrything..

| You Guys Are The Best tHANK YOU FOR ALL THE POSTS REGARDING MY BARCLAY'S CONSTANT CHEWING. I DEFINITELY WANT TO GET THE BONES THAT RUSTYS MOM IS REFERRING TO. DO I JUST ASK THE MEAT DEPARTMENT FOR BONES? AND DO THEY SPLINTER. I WORK DURING THE DAY AND MY SON AND DAUGHTER COME IN AND OUT TO CHECK ON BARCLAY, TAKE HIM FOR A WALK ETC. UNTIL I GET HOME, BUT I WOULD LIKE TO LEAVE HIM WITH ONE IF IT'S SAFE. |
