Default Keeping Logan at Clinic All Night After Neuter??

I dropped Logan off this morning for his neutering surgery. The clinic told me they like to keep the dogs overnight so that they can have complete rest. I told the girl at the front desk that I would prefer to bring Logan home. He is crated at home and will have complete rest. Plus, no one is at the clinic after 5:30 in the afternoon, so that means no one is around to make sure Logan is doing OK. AND he won't have anyone to take him outside to potty. At home, we will be here to make sure he's OK while he rests. They also said he probably won't get food until tomorrow morning, but I told them he is prone to hypoglycemia so must eat something today. They made note of that.

When you have taken your Yorke for spaying or neutering, have you had to leave them all night? I don't like this and plan to insist he come home tonight.

I never allow my dogs to stay overnight at the vet's unless it is a 24/7 facility. If something happens, and no one is there, what good is it. At least at home I can monitor my dogs and know they are OK. I would not leave him there overnight.

Ellie came home a few hours after her spay and liver biopsy.
Her vet is staffed 24/7 but there was no need to keep her.
I stayed up all night with her only because I was worried.
I would never leave my dog at a vet's office unsupervised after surgery.
It is very dangerous.
What if there is a reaction to the anesthesia or he doesn't come out of it right and no one is there? Reaction to pain meds? Incision comes open (he gets at it to chew somehow)? If they have an IV, they could pull it out... What if he is in pain and nobody catches it? What if he eats because he is hypoglycemic but throws it up (nauseous from anesthesia)? It would be as good as not eating at all...

No way would I leave Ellie like that...

Thank you. I am going to INSIST on bringing him home. It just doesn't make sense to leave him there for all the reasons each of you gave me. I will let you know how the operation goes as soon as I hear something. Thanks for the well-wishes!

Good luck on his nueter today. Maverick just went in last week and is doing GREAT so try not to worry to much. As for leaving him there overnight I wouldn't either. I don't think there is any reason and if no one is going to be there then there is no use you know. So definitely insist that you want to pick him up before they close. They can't refuse to let you have your own dog. Good luck and let us know how he is doing.

Good luck and well wishes.
Topper is scheduled for Thur. morning. My vet also wants to keep him overnight. The person on the phone stated that they are not there 24-7 but that the dr. comes in and out to check on them. So I understand your concern and confusion becuase we want what is best for our babies.

It's my understanding that no one comes in to check on the dogs after they leave the office at 5:30 p.m. I hope I dont' have a fight on my hand. I don't think I will, but you never know.

If no one is at the office....mine would not stay.

If necessary you can tell them...you will bring him in first thing tomorrow morning for a re-check.

You shouldn't have a fight on your hands.

Let me just say why many places are adament that people keep them at the clinic overnight- it always seems to come down to this, but many times people are just dumb!!! Not us of course but other people. It is very important that the dogs remain calm- no running, jumping, or bouncing around. Many people do not care?? understand?? I don't know what but they completely disregard the instructions.

I know my husband's friend that owns a small animal clinic makes clients sign a release if they bring them home as they have had numurous cases where clients take their pets home after surgery, the dog rips open sutures, and important internal body parts fall out they then want to sue the practice because they were allowed to take the animal home. What is wrong with people?

Anyway, my small animal vet prefers that I take my dogs home, citing the reasons stated by someone else in this thread. However, I think those chances are worth taking when faced with an owner who doesn't appear to take the instructions seriously.... Why can't people just listen???

I don't think it changes things even if they do come in and check.
He would still be alone for anywhere from 2-5 hours at a time which isn't okay after sugery in my opinion.

BUT, I also think that it is best to stay up with them the first night and make sure everything is okay. Most people don't, but if there is a problem, I'd want to catch it early.

sassy was spayed 2 weeks ago, we took her at 7:30 am vet called me at 9:30 am and told me all went well said i could pick her up at 3:30 that afternoon.
by 1:00 i was walking the floor so worried about her. my grand daughter and i went to pick her up and the vet said he was glad because she was so upset and that he thought she would rest better with us.
it was spring break and i took vacation so we could watch sassy close.
the vet told me that not many people care so much for a dog and most were just dropped off and had rather they look after them. i told him that sassy was not a dog to us she was family

I would bring him home, I'd rather him be in my care than no care.
