| ![]() Did you know that only 1 out of 7 dogs will live in the same home for its entire life? It is just one more reason to shut down the puppy mills and adopt rescues. I had read this figure once, but couldn't remember it exactly, so I went searching for it. I adopted my yorkies when they were 2 -- so I am their second & forever home. One more reason to find a responsible breeder who pre-screens buyers Consider that out of every litter of 7 puppies, 5 of them will have 3 different homes by the time they are 2 years old. Only 1 out of 7 will live in the same home for its entire life. An older dog will fare even more poorly. We must commit to keeping dogs inside our homes for their entire - perhaps up to 20-year lives - or else not acquire them at all. I know I'm talking to the choir here -- but we all need to continue to spread the word to those who do not know. One problem I had with Oprah's show yesterday was it said go to the rescues, well so many people even go to the rescue & then end up dumping the dog or cat again ![]()

| ![]() That's exactly why I have in my contract that my dogs MUST be returned to me if there is ever a time when they can't be kept by their owners...and I will stick to it. I also pre-screen potential buyers extensively. There are some of my dogs that will NEVER EVER leave me, and the females that I retire will be placed into forever homes with the same screening process the puppies are... The only way to do things is to do it right. |

| ![]() I didn't see the show but don't most of us have a dog that is in it's second home already?? Unless you keep your own puppies, they are all going to be in #2 house. Maybe that is why the 1/7 seems odd to me and not unusual. I would be surprised for that number to be higher considering most people buy from someone or some place to get their babies. Maybe i am just confused but it sounds like sensationalizm to me. I think all Puppy Mills should be outlawed and only breeding by the pros allowed but i don't know how it could be enforced with all the BYB's out there. UGH!! I don't watch Oprah so maybe I am missing something ![]() All my babies are on home #2 where they will stay forever and ever amen. |

I was just tying this figure into what I had seen on Oprah yesterday. The figure/fact - I got from a rescue site. I don't look at my house as the second home for the pets I bought from a breeder, and I don't believe this figure is counting those either. As probably 99% of animals leave their breeders homes. For those of us who love & are committed to a breed I can see how this number might seem overboard, but have you been to a rescue lately?? At our local rescue, it is not uncommon to see noted on their tag, that this animal has been at the shelter before ![]() Too many people seem to think animals are disposable

| ![]() Thanks for clarifying that. It did seem weird to me but if they don't count the 2nd home in those numbers then those stats are really sad ![]() I have been to the shelters unfortunately and it breaks my heart. i donate lots of things to them including food, clothes, blankets and $$ and i try to help when i can. My BFF runs a rescue no-kill organization in our area so i help her. It is shocking to see the precious babies that come through there. i don't understand why anyone but a professional breeder doesn't spay/neuter their pets...but that's JMO. |

| ![]() wow... people really need to realize that dogs are a big responsibility and should be taken seriously. it's very sad that people disregard them.

| ![]() I have always said a pet is more responsibility than a child! A child will grow, be able to do more and more for it's self! A pet will always need you to give it food and water!!
