| Cars and yorkies How do your yorkies behave in cars?! Archie starts panting with his tongue out for the whole ride, but he doesn't look out the window or anything like other dogs do. He just looks at me driving. I'm not sure if he's scared or excited but it's like, "Archie, calm down!!!". If he was scared, he wouldn't pant, right? Archie doesn't do well in cages or confined areas, so I'm not sure if he's feeling claustrophobic, or if he knows we're going somewhere and is really excited. I know that when he's scared, he crouches down. In a car, he just sits there and pants and won't play with any toys I give him or snack on treats. Any advice on how to change this behaviour and get him to just sit there? I want to add quickly that I don't put the heat on too high so I know it's not panting because he's hot. |

| Toto doesn't like to look out the window, but she sure does want to be there when you "start the engine"!! We always have one of her little fleecy beds on the console in case she wants to ride there but usually she just wants to snuggle up on my lap with a favorite blankie. If I am alone with her, I put the little bed in the passenger seat and she curls up there. Perhaps she likes to ride because we put things that are familiar to her in the car ... I don't know ... probably she just wants to be where we are!

| Consider yourself lucky he didn't yack right in the console like one of my dogs did once!! LOL! I carry a blanket or dog bed that's already "scented" by them when I travel. When we brought Luca Dean home and took him to the vet, we used the same blanket. He wanted to look out, but he shook the whole time! He'd look out the window and then burrow in the blanket. I try and take Dean on short rides when I can too, so he'll be used to traveling when we make longer trips. |

| Mia doesn't do well in the car. She has some anxiety and does a lot of panting. I have to crate her to calm her. It really works out better anyway because its safer for her , I can run the car seat/harness thru the handle on the crate and buckle her in. Bentley (maltese) on the other hand loves riding in the car but will only ride in my lap or laying on my neck ( I look like I have a white fur colar on) .. It's ok if I'm not driving but not safe if I'm the driver. I wish I had started him out confined in the crate...it's so much safer.

| Bentley has been riding in the car ever since the first day we got him and he loves it. When he's in the car it means that he did not get left behind at home, so he is very happy. When I say "let's go" he is the first one out the door and jumping in the car. Once in the car he is so happy to be going along that he just lays down and goes to sleep (I usually bring his bed and put it on the passenger seat for him to sleep in). |

| toby doesnt mind the car either, mostly because he doesnt have a choice, since i got him hes been carted EVERYWHERE (grandmas twice a week, we even take him to the movies with us )....... i did notice that he sorta did the panting thing once or twice, but i opened the window a tad to let him get some 'fresh' air and he stopped doing it........ i used to let him just chill in teh passanger seat, but since hes a puppy he wants to explore EVERYWHERE, and i cant drive and fight him at the same time...... so now he rides in his carrier if i am driving alone with him........ |

| Cecilia loves to go in the car. She will stand up on my leg and put her head out the window. I always hold her leash or leg so she doesn't fall or jump. Here she is in the car. |

| My dog gets so excited to go ---running and jumping and squeeling! Jumps into the car, I fasten her to the car seat and the FUN BEGINS! She yelps and whines all the time she is in there. I keep taking her, so she will get use to it, but I don't know if she ever will. She really wants to go, then acts like that! Go figure? I give her treats (or try to) but not interested. What I know she really wants is to climb all over me while I am driving, but can't let that happen. Any ideas out there? Pat |

| Penny's favorite thing to do is ride in the car. When I'm able to drive very slow, like through the neighborbood, I roll down her window enough for her to stick out her head. I have to keep a good hand on her because as soon as she sees a big dog or squirrel, she begins jumping and barking. Penny's awefully fierce to be so tiny!

| Penny weighs is 10 yrs old and weighs about 8 lbs. I make sure she can't fall out of the window though. I'm on the lookout for a yardsale carseat, I think she'd like being able to sit up high all the time. Quote:

| In a former message, I told how I made a car seat for my dog. I went to K-Mart and bought a plastic stool (with a rung around the four legs) and a plastic office basket. The kind with the front open and slits on the sides. I put one on top of the other and screwed them together. I bought a really nice soft pillow to put in the top, Tied a leash really good to the slits in the top and also around the cornor piece, and then ran the seat belt through the bottom (stool). It is really tight in the car and cost me around $10. It works really really well! Pat |

| I strive to get Archie to look out the window like cecelia. That's just the most adorable picture!!! But alas, I'm not sure if he will...the only way to justify his behaviour is to think that maybe he's captivated by my stunning beauty that all he does is stare at me and pant! My boyfriend said that he had no problem when he takes him in his car (he's got an SUV and puts archie in the very back), but he never thinks there's anything wrong with Archie and that I'm like a crazy mother. I'm hoping that as Archie grows older, he'll get more used to it. Do you put your yorkies in the backseat?!! I keep Archie in the front because with NY driving, your ride is never smooth. I'm afraid he'll fall off the back seat. |
