![]() I agree with Marlee... The tattoo is something you can see right away if someone has taken your baby. I think having it done while they're under anesthesia is a great option, too, because the pain is a non-issue. I haven't thought much about Roxy getting a tattoo yet.. She's still too young.

![]() I used MY KENNEL PREFIX AND A NUMBER PRIMROSE SD 1 ...meaning Stud Dog one PRIMROSE BB 1 ...Brood Bitch one PRIMROSE PET 1...a pet not for breeding. AKC required this type of ID or collars with tags. Some breeders used a series of numbers..I had a vet tech call me one time asking if I had let an adult go to a pet home recently? The vet saw the tatoo and asked her to call me.

![]() In York County in PA in the past if you wanted to get a lifetime dog license you had to have the dog tatooed. I currently have 3 dogs tatooed. My shepherd has a breeder tatoo in his ear that was done when he was very little, and he has another one with his lifetime dog license # on the inside of his leg. My golden is also tatooed with her lifetime license # on the inside of her leg. On August 1 Indiana (my Yorkie) will be going to be neutered and I will also be having him tatooed with his lifetime license. I asked my vet about the chipping, and I'm not convinced. Chips can migrate in the dog's body, and also they can be removed pretty easily if someone really wanted to. Tatooing on the inside leg is visible plus almost impossible to remove, at least alot more trouble than a microchip would be. My Golden was tatooed as a puppy at a clinic that was held by the local AKC club. She was awake and never moved or cried. I doubt that it was that painful. My vet did the shepherd while he was under to be neutered. She prefers to do it while they are asleep, not because of the pain but she likes them to be really still when she does it.

I have my pups chipped. A couple reasons. One is a way to prove that a dog is yours. Nearly all vet offices and dog control offices and the like have the wands and can identify them. They "wand" them if they are brought in. It doesn't replace vigilence but it gives some comfort. We know our babies from another but some people think they all look the same...this is a sure fire way of telling one from another. You can have it done while they are getting fixed...then they don't even know it. Libby, my scottie, was awake and got it with her other shots. Never acted like she even knew. Roxy is too small yet. | |

![]() IMO, there is no substitute for visibility. YorkieRose has been breeding and showing longer than many of us (hey, not me. I am older than she is) are old. To me, having a visible ID is sorta like a person wearing a wedding band. It is right out there to keep hands-off. Oh , my goodness. I need to get dinner..I am getting hypoglycemic..

![]() My shepherd is ear tattooed, and his was done as a puppy. I will be getting macy tattoed as well as microchipped when she goes for her spaying. My shep breeder tatoos her breeders and show dogs as well and it does seem painless.

![]() It has been a long time..at least 8 yrs since I had any done...it was $15...they used to do them at dog shows also. I would be surprised if alot of vets do it since chips are so easily done..and the vet does not need to buy any equipment in insert a chip. I can not count the times people have made a joke saying they could never steal one with a tatoo.
