In York County in PA in the past if you wanted to get a lifetime dog license you had to have the dog tatooed. I currently have 3 dogs tatooed. My shepherd has a breeder tatoo in his ear that was done when he was very little, and he has another one with his lifetime dog license # on the inside of his leg. My golden is also tatooed with her lifetime license # on the inside of her leg. On August 1 Indiana (my Yorkie) will be going to be neutered and I will also be having him tatooed with his lifetime license. I asked my vet about the chipping, and I'm not convinced. Chips can migrate in the dog's body, and also they can be removed pretty easily if someone really wanted to. Tatooing on the inside leg is visible plus almost impossible to remove, at least alot more trouble than a microchip would be. My Golden was tatooed as a puppy at a clinic that was held by the local AKC club. She was awake and never moved or cried. I doubt that it was that painful. My vet did the shepherd while he was under to be neutered. She prefers to do it while they are asleep, not because of the pain but she likes them to be really still when she does it.
