9 weeks old is so young for him to be left alone all day. My suggestion is to get another puppy. I would get either another Yorkie or some other toy breed.

I also don't like the idea of a dog being locked in the bathroom. I would rather get a large expen and put a smaller crate inside it. He'll go in there and sleep and come out to do his business and play. But please consider getting him a playmate. He will be much happier than being alone all day. It's really sad for him to be alone like that for so much of his life.

welcome to the crazy world of yorkie parenthood! all 4 of ours sleep in bed w/us every night. we have 4 beds in the kitchen and 4 beds upstairs. during the day they will go from bed to bed but at night they want to be snuggled w/us. i did try the crate on the floor next to the bed - that lasted about an hour -- the crying/whining/whimpering was just too much for us so we gave in and 8 years later have 4 5-7 lb pups sleeping in a queen size bed w/me and my husband who is 6' 225 lbs. no one has ever gotten hurt either!

Welcome to YT!! You've gotten a lot of advice - so I'll just say let us know how the bedside crate works. By the way, what's your little guy's name?

Congrats on your new furbaby!!!
What I did when I got Odie he was only 6 weeks old ( we didn't realize he was so young) I got a crate put some soft blankies in there with a clock wrapped in a hand towel and he slept with the sound of the ticking of the clock. He did get up during the night and what I did was took him out of the crate and let him go pee I fed him and then he would cuddle for a little bit then fell asleep in my arms. I put him back into the crate and he went to sleep for another couple hours. He doesn't sleep with us because we have a high bed and I didn't want him to fall out of our bed. He is now 10 weeks old and is doing very well. He now knows that about 11:30ish is bed time and he will go into his *little house* and go to sleep. He is a wonderful little companion and I couldn't imagine our lives without him there.
Good luck with your new baby.
All the best and welcome to the wonderful world of Yorkies

Welcome to YT. I can understand why you put him in the bathroom during the day when you work but at night too? Its too long of a time for him to be alone.I can understand people need to work but maybe he can sleep in his own playpen and crate in your bedroom at night so that at least he can see you? Maybe you can try one of those playpen/xpen with a crate in it and you can move it to the bedroom/living room etc wherever you want it to be. It will be better than in the bathroom. 9 weeks is very young. He is not going to be spoilt just because he doesn't sleep in the bathroom. Yorkies are very intelligent and they do thrive on having human attention.

We put him in our bathroom because it is tiled. The room itself has a jacuzzi tub, a separate shower, double sinks, so it is quite big and plenty of room to run around in. Plus it has a huge window made out of those glass cubes PLENTY of sunlight. About 90% of the time I come home for lunch and let him out to go potty and play with him a little. Last night we tried to let him sleep with us but
all he wanted to do was play and bite, it was already midnight so we had to put him up so we could sleep. Tonight we will try putting him on our night stand in his kennel of course so he can see us and HOPEFULLY all will be well. I'll report back tomorrow.

When we first got Ranger we put him in his little tiny soft-sided crate, right on the bed next to my pillow. I can't tell you guys how good it was to hear that other people do this!! I thought I might just be a little crazy!!!

Once you start letting him sleep with you in the bed it makes it really difficult to go back to the crate. He will cry more than ever before to get back in the bed. Just thought I'd warn you.

Default similar situations

my bf and i got Kash at 9 weeks (he's 13 weeks now), and we both work during the day. we leave him in the kitchen with a baby gate, so he can't get out. we keep his crate in there and water, food, toys and a pee pad for when he can't hold it.

he hates when we leave him in the morning, but i come home everyday at lunch to let him out and have a quick visit. he gets super excited, then he freaks out again when i have to go back to work. he uses the pee pad sometimes, but he also has accidents on the floor (but it's never #2). however, it's an easy clean up since it's linolium and not carpet.

since he's locked in the kitchen ALL day, i don't like to do it all night as well. i just think that's too much time for him to be alone without people contact, so he sleeps in our bed at night. he's really good. he sleeps through the whole night. i feel like it makes him feel like part of the family.

it's up to you what you do. i'm not implying anyone else's methods are wrong in any way... i just feel like the puppy becomes less sociable when they're left alone for more than 16 hours a day, 5 days a week.

good luck!

Congrats on your Yorkie!!! At night Isabella sleeps in her crate but when she wakes up we take her to relieve herself and then let her sleep on the bed. I do this so the cats n Tobey have a opportunity to sleep with us without her trying to harass them.
