| Looking into another baby I responded to an ad, much more legitimate than the others I posted And had wanted to verify that the pups had their dewclaws and tails done. Not that its a huge ordeal with the tails, since some arent doing them anymore, but still just wanted to know. This is the reply I got: So sorry about the delay--busy weekend. The pictures are of Ginger and I added two pictures of her with the little boys. I also included the pictures that I posted. I called our vet at 4:50 Friday afternoon to check on the ears, tail and dewclaws. I totally misunderstood him, he said, "No, I do them at 5 days, not 5 weeks." From 5 days to 12 weeks is a surgerical procedure. So, can you tell this is our first litter? Let me know if you would like to see them. They are beginning to slow down on the nursing and have started eating puppy food. ______________________________ Is it normal for someone to not have anything done with their dewclaws even?

| Sounds like they are just kind of inexperienced, the breeder admitted it was the first litter! I would just go look at them, it's a good sign that they invited you to come see them IMO. |

| Is it something you would have done later? I mean, I guess its purely cosmetic and all, so its not a really big deal right? I dont know, I can say all the time that I hate how much we alter dogs for cosmetic sake, but at the same time, I dont know that I would jump on board for getting a long tailed, flop eared doberman either. Although my Izzy's ears do flop, lol. I think $550 is a high price to be asking for these pups, unless they had great blood lines. I'm sorta torn.

| If you are breeding yorkies, wouldn't you know that certain things need to be done? I would be rather leery of this person, what else haven't they done? Ask lots of questions. |

| We are not breeders but decided to breed our male and female one time, mainly just to get another puppy for ourselves. I won't go into the long story, but it was a complete disaster. On the subject of the thread, however, we did a lot of research before and after the breeding/delivery and knew that the tails/dew claws should be done between 3-5 days. Our vet confirmed this during one of the visits prior to delivery. When we took the puppies up for this the vet docked the tails but refused to do the dew claws because of the size of the puppies and the fact that he thought they wouldn't be a problem. Two of our puppies have gone on to new homes and we kept one. They are only 4 months and to date, we have had no problem with the dew claws; although we do keep them clipped, same as the others. I'd love my babies either way, but if neither is done as a tiny pup, the procedures become more painful (and expensive) as they age. IMO, if it wasn't done as a puppy, leave them alone. |

| That was kind of my thinking. I mean, I know they said they were new to it, but wouldnt you research it a little before going into it?

| I personally like the idea of getting my baby from a breeder that has had a few littlers. They know what they are doing, they have a history of litters to go by, and everything seems to go smoother in general. I know every one starts somewhere but, when I was looking for Sadie, I was very pleased the my breeder had expseriance. JMO

| I sure would be wary of buying for a breeder that inexperienced. Everyone starts somewhere and has to go through a first litter, but a breeder should know what to expect and what needs to be done before breeding. It sounds like this breeder is clueless...I'm sure they didn't do any health screening before breeding either. With as many health problems as yorkies have, I sure wouldn't buy from someone clueless...way too big of a risk. You can have tails and dewclaws done when they are older. I wouldn't do the tail...It would be an amputation and painful. But the dewclaws I would have removed...you can do it at the same you time spay/neuter. A friend of mine has a yorkie and one of his dewclaws grew back so she had it removed when he was neutered.
