We are not breeders but decided to breed our male and female one time, mainly just to get another puppy for ourselves. I won't go into the long story, but it was a complete disaster. On the subject of the thread, however, we did a lot of research before and after the breeding/delivery and knew that the tails/dew claws should be done between 3-5 days. Our vet confirmed this during one of the visits prior to delivery. When we took the puppies up for this the vet docked the tails but refused to do the dew claws because of the size of the puppies and the fact that he thought they wouldn't be a problem. Two of our puppies have gone on to new homes and we kept one. They are only 4 months and to date, we have had no problem with the dew claws; although we do keep them clipped, same as the others. I'd love my babies either way, but if neither is done as a tiny pup, the procedures become more painful (and expensive) as they age. IMO, if it wasn't done as a puppy, leave them alone.
