I posted last week that Kai was really sick , after a couple trips to the vet , the looked at the red lump on the belly agian , and pulled out what the belive was a screw worm ( it's really a fly in a larvae stage) (it was embedded in her skin) The vet said he had never seen anything like that on a dog that he see's it in cattle. I'm guessing she picked this up in southern colorado , when we where at the ranch , Just wondering if anyone else has ever heard of this? It sure made Kai really sick , after 4 antibodic shots and a weeks work of oral antibodic's , plus a topical cream she is fianlly herself agian!!!

Never heard of a screw worm but I sure am glad she's feeling better!!

Never heard of that - Creepy! I'm glad he figured it out. It's like one of those shows on the discovery channel. My kids and hubby love them. I'm just glad it's not common.

Did you happen to take a picture of what that looked like up close? I've never heard of it. Tatum is around cattle alot and so we appreciate the "heads up" on that potential bad thing!

Yes we too around farms and cattle. Does the vet have any idea how that happened? Couldn't be from eating flies could it? That's my dog's favorite way to pass the time!

I had a friend who's dog had the same thing. I cannot remember what it was called, but it was the same thing. The dog had what looked to be a red lump and the vet dug a worm larvae out of it. The dog was just fine and no after effects.

I'm glad they figured out what it was. A less intelligent vet might have let that go for too long. I'm glad she is on the up-swing!

Oh now I know what you are talking about. I was thinking it was on the inside of him, I didn't realize it was on the outside skin. DUH! Yes I have seen my uncle who has a dairy do this to a cow. It was disgusting!!! I will ask him about what the cause is. I think there has to be an entry point, I could be wrong. But I think between the toes or a cut. I'm going to go research this. THat's really gross being on your dog, poor baby!

I have never heard of that!! I am so glad the vet caught it and Kai is being treated. Thanks for posting about it, I learned something new today.

Wouls a heartworm pill like interceptor take care of these kind of worms also???

I know about screw worms. Being from a rural farming and ranching community I hear the "older" generations talk about screw worms. My dad says that you really do not see them as much as they used to. They used to remove them from the cattle by placing an open end of a soda bottle over the spot where the worm was located and pushing down on it. This would pop the worm out of the cow's skin. EWWWWW, gross! I don't think I will ever forget that story. I have never heard of a dog getting one until now, but anything is possible. Good luck w/ your little one!

I remember those awful worms on my uncles cattle..ugh!!!
A bit off the subject...
Has anyone watched a TV program about Americans going to live with people in a remote place for two weeks? Forgot the name if it...some people from Alabama went to a remote African village. Each day I get up and say..Thank you God I am a woman living in America.
There is so much we do not have to deal with..and we think these woman are used to it, so it doesn't bother them..not so.

and......
These people picked huge blood engorged ticks off cattle and ate them...the Americans brought Moon pies for everyone.
