| When to let pups outside? When do you guys who raise puppies usually let them go outside for the first time? My little ones are 7 and almost 8 weeks old. All have had their first shots and are still nursing a bit. Normally I would have already let them out, but the last time I went to the vet I was told that the whole reason we give a series of puppy shots is because they do not always take the first time???? I cannot remember why she said that they don't always work each time, but she said that we give so many because there are different times when the puppies are more receptive to them. Do ya'll think it is okay to let them play in the grass? I have a fenced in yard so no strange dogs are ever back there to leave anything bad behind.

| I let my little ones out when the weather is nice and they are about 6 weeks old but I start potty training early outside with them, they love to play and investigate, I am outside with them and they are never left out unattended . |

Yorkie Lover Donating Member | I am no expert, but we got both of our girls at 8 weeks and we let them outside in our fenced yard and the vet said that as long as it is clean...and my aunt had Magic going outside around 6 weeks to start potty training the litter...I am not sure what the "correct" answer is here, but that is just my experience!!!

| Thanks. I am just so worried about them picking anything up around her. I know a few years back, South Texas had a real problem w/ Parvo. Since then I have had litters and they have been out around 6 weeks w/ not problems. I just wanted to be sure.

Donating YT 14K Club Member | I started taking my pups outside around 6 weeks. They were very cautious at first and didn't know what to think of the bird sounds and vehicles driving by. It took them about a week to get use to it. Now, they beg to go outside and investigate!

| My pups are 7 weeks tomorrow, they have been going outside about a week. I had to put up a cage today, they are getting to busy for me to keep up with them. Two have fallen in the pond and one in the pool (just on the step, luckily).

| I normally wait until my puppies are 12-14 weeks old before I actually let them go outside in the yard.. I have a puppy x-pen I set up on the patio with a soft blanket on the patio.. I do have a concern with the original post: You had commented that your puppies have had there first vaccination and are still nursing some? I worked as a vet tech for years and I was always told to believe that if you vaccinate a puppy while they are still nursing the vaccination is no good.. The vets always said to wait and vaccinate after the puppies are done nursing.. Melanie |

| Melanie- Now that you say that, I think I do remember hearing something about not vaccinating while nursing. Maybe that is what the vet meant when she said that the pups are not always receptive to the vaccines. I have noticed that my pups will go a couple of days with out nursing and then try to nurse and the mom will let them. I guess it is because they get their immunities from mama- maybe those immunities are what conteract the vaccine. You are right though. I just know I have heard that before. I don't think it hurst anything to vaccinate them- it just might not do any good either. I am just going to keep them on schedule for the vaccines because mama is becoming less and less accepatable of their nursing on her. Thanks for the response.

| Maggie has been going outside since she was 8 weeks old. We also have two Australian Cattle Dogs. They all play great together. That too, and Maggie is potty trained for outside. She is now 4 1/2 months old and completely house trained. Glad I started at 8 weeks old for outside training. I do have to watch her carefully, because of a hawk now and then. I take her out on a leash to potty, but when I know it's not the feeding time for hawks, we go and play with the big dogs off leash.
