| Another Funny Question Why do dogs tilt their heads from side-to-side when talking to them? Are they trying to listen and understand or does it show confusion? I'm sure we've all got our thoughts about this but is there any animal-behavior evidence about what it means?

| Found this! It's not just dogs that tilt their heads, lots of animals do it, including people, and most of the time it's to locate the source of a sound. The reason for the tilt is because both the ears are are at the same height on the head. Because ears are on different sides of the head, the brain is able to use these two sounds coming from two different horizontal positions (i.e. left and right) to get an idea of direction. But both of these sounds are coming from the some vertical position, which makes it harder to distinguish the height. The easy way to compensate for this is to tilt the head slightly. I dunno..but they sure are cute when they do it!

| I think they are listening intently and thinking about if they are going to obey or not!

| I dont know either why they do it, but they sure melt my heart when they do tilt their heads. I also think they are listening extra carefully and saying, Yeah I am listening, but aint I cute!

| It Makes Sense Quote:
Explanation aside, it sure is fun to wonder what they might be thinking as they're listening to us! The thoughts on that are adorable and hilarious too!

| I always thought that it was because they are tuning in all of their senses to figure out something or study it more intently but the level of the ears makees a lot of sense to me. |

| I agree. I am sure there is a sensible answer for this behavior; but it is like trying to convince yourself a smiling baby just has gas. Somethings are better just enjoyed and not explained

My furkids Donating Member | I think they are probably thinking.....WHAT in the world are you SAYING!! You know I don't understand human!! Although when I say..."do you want to go see gramma??" they perk up their little ears, tilt their heads and their eyes get big...I think maybe the tone we use when talking to them...
