| Bitsy got her period! Bitsy got her period a few days ago and I was wondering how long I now have to wait to get her spayed? How long does the first menstrual cycle last? Bitsy will be 6 months old tomorrow and I had her scheduled for her spay at the end of January, thinking that small dogs like her usually get their first heat at 8 months. I'm also wondering, since she got her period will her growing slow down significantly? She's already 7 lbs! Thanks!

| Generally, an entire heat cycle lasts 3 weeks (to be safe). Some vets will do the spay as soon as the heat is over, some would rather wait a while afterwards. Talk to your vet and see what they recommend. |

| I think some vets will do it during the heat, but there is an extra charge. It might be worth it if you have another dog who could get to her during her cycle. My Zoey quit growing after 6 mo. She gained a few ounces, but nothing significant.

We had a female who had to be spayed during heat and she had a horrible time recovering. Not what we wanted, but her life would have been at risk if we hadn't. Last edited by BamaFan121s; 12-31-2007 at 09:34 AM. | |
