| So scary!!!! Yesterday evening I brought Lexie to our vet for a wellness check up since we had just gotten her and I just wanted to make sure that she was okay, and keep her up to date on her shots. Well the first thing that went wrong is that the vet said that the breeder missed one of her puppy boosters so she is late on her second shot. That kind of scared me, but things happen. So then the vet went on checking everything and I brought up a scab that I noticed on Lexie's neck when I was giving her a bath. After the vet probed her scab and checked everything out she said something about ear mites under her breath and checked her ears and exclaimed, "OH MY! SOMEONE HAS DIRTY EARS!" I wasn't too surprised because her ears are so big. The vet said she wanted to look under the microscope at the dirt and literally seconds later she came back in and she that she doesn't need to look at it because when she was carrying the swab, she saw an ear mite crawling around. Well we got our shot and our ear mite medicine and left. Everything seemed okay and we went shopping for an hour or so. We then went home and she seemed a little tired, but she was still playing so I didn't think anything of it. While I was eating dinner my boyfriend told me that Lexie was climbing up his leg, so I looked at her and her eyes were completely swollen shut! Right away I picked her up and I noticed her breathing was very loud and labored so we ran out the door. I didn't even pick up my jacket. By the time we got to the vet in the next town over she was crying loudly in between breaths and her eyes were Santa Claus red and totally closed. I burst in the door BAWLING and the vet tech took her from my arms and rushed her in the back room. They started an IV, gave her an epi-pen shot in the rump, and gave her a shot of some steroid into the IV port. The vet came out after about 20 minutes with Lexie and said that she is going to be under observation for about 30 more minutes, but everything is fine. She had a counter reaction to the shot!! The vet said that within 30 more minutes, and she could have been dead from the swelling in her thoat! She was miserable all night and kept crying because she was so itchy and just didn't feel good. She was on Benadryl too so she was really drowsy and couldn't walk straight. It was TERRIBLE! I always thought that a counter reaction is something you hear about but always think, "OH! It will never happen to me!" Be warned, it happens!

| Wow...I've been in your shoes on that one before and that is some scary stuff! Make me wonder though...if this was her second series of shots, why didn't she have a similar reaction to the first one... |

| Thats what I asked the vet too! She said that it is a 50/50 chance of happening. She said that we are going to give her the third shot and it might happen again but I'm going to give her some medicine 3 hours before and she said that it may not even happen. She said that if it does, then we won't give her any more vaccines and she will give us a written document saying she can't have them because we travel out of country with our dogs every summer and normally she would need them to leave...

| I had a very similar situation. The first time I took Bauer for his puppy vaccinations, the vet said. If you notice any swelling of the face, vomiting or difficulty breathing, bring him back right away. Well . . . before we even got out the front door Bauer threw up then laid on the ground and sarted panting. I piccked him up and noticed his eyes were begining to swell. I ran him back to the nurse and they took him in the back to start him on benedryl. The doctor said he had an allergic reaction to the live cultures in the vaccine. They had to keep him for several hours, for observation. I was a mess. Luckily the reaction began before we left the vets office. So now any time he has a booster he has to have a shot of benedryl 15 mins prior to the injection. |

| What vaccine was it, lepto? Vaccine reactions are actually lots more common than people think.
