Banning Thread Dictator Donating Member | Bad habits Eddie is a chewer. He shreads sticks and cloth toys, and I'm certain he swallows both. He's had no medical problems from it, but I've seen colored thread from the cloth is his stool. Is this something I should be worried about? I've been hestitant to take the sticks away from him because he LOVES chasing them. On a related note, he's also a licker. He licks everything from hands to leather couches. I've almost broken him of that, but I'm wondering if it's common with the breed.

| Bitter Apple Have you tried a product called "bitter apple?" Drs. Fosters and Smith also have a similar product under their own label. You could start by spraying anything that should not be near his teeth or tongue. The other thing, I have to ask - what do you give your dog to chew? Chewing is natural and a necessary for dogs but you don't want him chewing anything that is not safe. If you are finding whole bits of interesting stuff in his stool and esp, if you see a dark stool (black in color) or any "red" - you may be in for some trouble. I had a poodle growing up who was a soil/poop eater - she developed a GI tract ulcer and lost a lot of weight. |

| Chachi likes to chew also and we just make sure he has a variety of things to chew on. He really enjoys rawhide sticks. It keeps him out of trouble.

Banning Thread Dictator Donating Member | I'm leery about giving him rawhide sticks because he swallows them, and I've heard they can be tough to digest. He has kongs and lots of rubber toys to chew. He also has a hard hoof toy that is good for his teeth. But he still loves sticks, and it's hard to keep them away from him. If others think sticks are bad for him, I'll try the bitter apple product that was suggested. Thanks.

| Sticks can be very bad, especially depending where they came from. There are many plants that are toxic to dogs, not to mention that splinters from wood can cause internal perforations. Nylabones , Kongs, large marrow bones are all good to chew items. Try replacing with different ones and switching them around to keep him interested. I would also remove any cloth things that are shredding enough to be ingested from his reach. |

Banning Thread Dictator Donating Member | As for separation anxiety, this may be an "old wives tale" in the making, but when I leave the house for the day I tell Eddie "I'm going to work." He used to chew on my pants when I tried to leave, but since I've been saying that, he's stopped. I feel like it lets him know that I'm leaving but coming back. I started that with our macaw. She just says "goodbye" and calms down.

Banning Thread Dictator Donating Member | I went out and bought $30 worth of healthy bones and toys for Eddie yesterday, and the good news is he loves nylabones. The bad news is, he buries them. And at $3.50 a pop, I'll be in the poorhouse in no time. It's still better than sticks, though. I've just got to keep a better eye on him.
