| Larger Yorkies, Broken Leashes My neighbor has a larger Yorkie boy who is very strong. She uses a retractable leash. I was babysitting him once, and when I walked him on it he pulled so hard, I was afraid he would break it. Has anyone had this experience with a retractable leash? |

| I just use a regular leash made by Cindy which I like much better, but I think it says on those retractable ones how many pounds it can sustain. Maybe when you watch the dog you could just use a regular leash to be on the safe side. If the dog pulls really hard, then maybe suggest to his parents that he should be trained. |

| Using a retractable leash on a dog that pulls like that can be dangerous. If they pull too hard and it snaps the leash can cut your hands. I've heard many stories of people getting cut by retractable leashes. Maybe just get a long nylon leash this way you won't be afraid that they will snap it.

| I use a retractable leash for Chip on our long walks, he was never a puller so that was never an issue for us. Zippy was allways a puller and wanderer on a leash and that has never happened to us either.

| that is a very good question. I have often wondered that my self. we use retractable leashes on our 4 yorkies also. When mine are in a big hurry to get to that spot they pull like a team of horses. that just might be a question to pose to the company.

| Another board I belong to had a thread about this happening a lot. I was wondering how common this problem is. I know if my neighbor's dog's leash had snapped, I'd never get him back, because he was on a mission looking for his Mommy. I was pretty nervous because he was straining at the leash. I took him for a long walk to calm him down. He was very upset that his Mommy left him, despite all the sweet talking and cuddling I was providing. |

| Those can also snap and hit you in the face when the retract back they have a weight limited on them. You should start using a nylon leash, it would be safer for you and the dog. How much does he weigh, my Yorkie is a larger one also I was just curious on how much he weighs.

| I've never had a problem with a retractable and mine do pull. They have weight limits based on the strength of the cord I'm pretty sure. |

| Buddy has broken two retractable leashes therefore I am back to using the standad 1" wide 16ft leash. He's a puller, head down and 100 mi an hour and off we go I find that the standard leash also gives me better control. He does not like large dogs so it's much easier to pull him close to me when I see one. He, also, is very muscular. |

| I'd use a regular leash when I watch him, because I wouldn't want to be responsible if he broke the retractable leash.

I appreciate everyone's advice. I am going to tell her that I want to use her regular leash from now on. I'd never forgive myself if he got away, and I know it would break my heart as well has his Mommy's. Thanks everyone! | |
