| chip or tatoo? after I got my ollie baby back I want some way to prove that he is mine! with absalutly no doubts to anyone. I want him to be tatooed, but I heard micro chips are good to. but with the tattoo you can look right at it and see, you dont need the scaner. but what would hurt him less? |

| Otis is microchipped. I think the breeder chipped him when he was really small. Thank God I've never had to use it, but I think tatooing would be more painful than chipping. |

| Yes, I wouldn't dare think of tattooing my baby... It's painful for a human, imagine for such a little critter! I couldn't bear to see Yoda in pain. We've accidentally stepped on him enough times. :P Anyone know the costs of microchipping? I haven't looked into it much. |

| I don't know the cost. Otis came like that when I adopted him! This is sooo silly: For the longest time, I thought the chip inserted in Otis was actually a homing device, and if Otis got lost, I thought there was a special radar to help us locate where he was!!! Not the case. For those who don't know what it is, it's a chip under the skin with the dog's information on it, and you can read the info with a scanner a some vets....it's almost like a permanent dog tag. |

| Ya know Junebug, I think if we marketed a GPS-dog locating device like that in pets, we would be rich in no time. That's an incredible idea! Now we only need a coupla million to research and develop it and market it. hahah |

| I found this information on a veterinary website [Ohio, I believe] ... Patrick has wanted to have Toto Microchipped since day one .... I was afraid that it might be painful! If it's no more painful than a shot ... guess we'll talk to "Doctor Lucy" and have her "chipped". Although ... chances of her ever getting lost is slim to none .... stolen? ... that too but I don't want to take any chances! Microchip Implantation We have hundreds of products designed to meet the unique needs of each of your pets. One of them, the Avid Chip, is described below. This painless technique will aid you in locating your pet should he or she become lost or stolen. The AVID Chip, a painless means of providing positive identification of your pet should he or she ever become lost or stolen: American Veterinary Identification Devices (AVID) The AVID chip is a tiny computer chip about the size of a grain of rice which has an identification number programmed into it. We inject the AVID Chip under the skin of the pet where it safely stays for life, providing a permanent, positive identification that cannot be lost, altered or removed, and does not migrate in the animalīs body. It will last for decades...well beyond the life span of your pet as the AVID chip will never wear out. The injection is not painful, and permanent identification is instantaneous. The AVID Chip costs under $35.00. The fee is certainly less than the cost of trying to locate your lost or stolen pet, not to mention the anguish, worry and heartbreak of the loss of your pet-perhaps forever. The injection is not painful and permanent identification is instantaneous. Even if your pet is not a patient of ours, we can still arrange to have your pet microchipped.

| Doesn't seem too bad, I just wonder if all veterinary clinics have these chip devices to ID the pet when the pet comes in. Cuz if only 10% of the clinics have the chip identifying machines, it'd be rather pointless to get our Yorkies chipped... |

| This news story may help. How ironic we are talking about microchips this week and a Yorkie of all dogs gets found because of it. :P http://www.yorkietalk.com/forums/sho...?p=588#post588 |

Both of my Bichons are microchipped and the Chi will be soon. Lacy didn't even yelp when they inserted the chip and Cosmo's was done when he was neutered. The chip is under the skin and even if there's a momentary pinch, it's worth it. I would think they would put the dog "under" to tattoo them because of the pain and to be sure they were quiet, but don't know. | |
