Both of my Bichons are microchipped and the Chi will be soon. Lacy didn't even yelp when they inserted the chip and Cosmo's was done when he was neutered. The chip is under the skin and even if there's a momentary pinch, it's worth it. I would think they would put the dog "under" to tattoo them because of the pain and to be sure they were quiet, but don't know.
