Our older dog has the run of the house, but I truly believe him to be 99% trustworthy. He is usually found in the same place we left him. But Coby won't have the run of the whole house for years to come, if then. Yorkies have much more energy than Shi Tzu's.

I would not get rid of the pee pad. For new dog owners I think it is best to never start but there are advantages. For you, your dog already knows where to go and I wouldn't mess with the system.

Of course it is better for dogs to go outside but what if you're gone for eight hours? I don't think a small dog should be expected to hold it that long, so I have mixed feelings on them.

Mine are dual trained as well. During the warm months they go to the bathroom outside. But during the cool months they go on pads inside. When winter comes it gets really cold here. Not to mention all the snow we get, it gets alot higher then their heads would be.

I really like the arrangement. I don't have deal with wet dogs when it's raining out or snowing because they can use the pads inside.

Tink is also dual-trained. She prefers to pee outside and poo on the pads. She used to poo outside too, but the big dog next door spooked her once while she was pooing and that was the end of that! She will poo outside if I stand right next to her and sing

, no clue why I have to sing. The big dog's dad laughs at me.

She does want the pad in the bedroom though so she can potty at night. She gets up very quietly and pees and then throws herself on me when she climbs back up the steps. She just has to get her praise.

1. If I let Coby pee in the night, I can so see him doing that for praise too.

I try to limit water intake after 10PM and then hope for the best, but I leave piddle pads down, just in case .... so far, so good.

Personally, the pee pads are for my sake too! LOL. All of mine will go outside, or if they can't get outside, they will faithfully use a pad. I like it because when we travel, all I have to do is unfold a pad and they will use it. No walking in unfamiliar dirty grounds to find a spot.

Also, I'm not on a regular schedule with helping care for my Mom, so it's hard to absolutely be here at a certain time to do outdoor potty breaks.

My motto,"If it ain't broke, don't fix it!!"

(I also have no carpet in my home...another dog-friendly choice!)

If a 'vet' - or anyone told me to get rid of what works for me, I think I would respond with: "OK, so that means you'll be coming right over to help clean up?"

There are so many advantages to having a potty station inside:
a) bad weather
b) you can't always be home for potty breaks - that puts a lot of pressure on you and your pet.
c) when travelling, you don't have to wander around outside in unfamiliar territory
d) more sleep! Pooch can go potty in "the right place" and feel good about him/herself without disturbing your much-needed rest.

And No Fleas, no allergies from stuff in the grass! I have weighed out all the options, everything on pee pads to me was a pro, except the having to pick up poop off the pee pads, but, I've done it for 10 years now, so, it doesn't bother me..When the 2 big dogs go outside, my hubby shovels it up everytime..can't stand having poop in the grass! Oh, and I have also tried picking up the pee pad(I have one in the family room and one in laundry room), and just having them use the one in the laundry room, but they will pee where the pee pad was, so decided just to leave it there. I sold my little biewer girl because when I got her, she was trained outside, and couldn't get her to go potty on the pee pad..she did love my carpet though..

I don't use pee pads as I don't want Elphaba to think ANY where inside is okay. She's 15.5 weeks now and has been signaling me to go out for 2 weeks today. The only issue we were having since she started signaling me is morning pooping. I could take her out 4 times for 20 minutes each and no poop. She'd go in the crate in between. Then when I'd finally cave and bring her into the bathroom with me she'd poop on the tile immediately. But this week I got a nice snuggly warm jacket and now she's pooping outside almost right away.

Do what you feel is best.
I am not a fan of pee pads myself.
Both my girls are outside trained and rarely have accidents. Granted they are bigger but they go out about two or three times a day. My mother-in-law had a small dog and she was completely outside trained. She would go 8 hours without going potty.
I do not plan on Winstin going that long. He goes up to four or five hours now without going potty. He is going to be 5 months tomorrow and rarely has an accident in the house.

I love love love pee pads.

I guess if she peed other than the pee pad I would not like it but their bladders are so small and to hold it for four hrs ( the longest I am gone ever) would be just too hard on her and now that she is older I am so glad she is pee pad trained since she pee's even more. You know I feel it is important for walks every day rain shine or snow but cold mornings and late night I am so glad we have our good ol pee pads to fall back on when needed

Vets are great with medical questions but not so sure all are about nutrition or training

my little one is 6 1/2 mnths and has been trained since 3 mnths to go outside..and when i first got her she thought it was ok to poo/pee in her crate..now as soon as she goes out thats the first thing shes does is pee/poo..she thinks the pee pee pads are some type of blanket..i try to put it down whens its raining etc since she hates the rain and walks on it like its broken glass haha...i guess i should get her some booties

I wish i didnt have to use the pee pads but i live in a third floor apt and i am gone for like 7-8hrs a day and there is no way that he can hold that long nor would i want him to so i guess like a few people said it's good for some and some rather do without it

I live by myself and out of the house for 9 hours. I think it would be cruel to make any animal hold it for 9 hours. I know I can probably hold it for 9 hours if I have to, but I'd be miserable, so I wouldn't do it to Bitsy.

She goes outside and on washable pee pads.
