I would not get rid of the pee pad. For new dog owners I think it is best to never start but there are advantages. For you, your dog already knows where to go and I wouldn't mess with the system.
Of course it is better for dogs to go outside but what if you're gone for eight hours? I don't think a small dog should be expected to hold it that long, so I have mixed feelings on them.
