Sad I have just given up

on trying to get a yorkie mix that we can afford or get. I have try the animal shelters and rescues and no one seems to be able to help me. They either want 300 to 500 dollars or just don't have one.
I am not to sure what to do
Do you have any suggestions?

I saved for close to six months for Gizmo. Just put aside some money every month or so, and you can do it too!

I am sure that the right dog will turn up at the right time. I would TRY to be patient though. In all honesty, $300 is a lot of money but it is nothing when you are talking about vet bills, so it is probably better to save up. Even if you get a $100 Yorkie the vet bills could go into the $1000's (or maybe not). It depends on the dog's health. We have spent over $2000 in the last 10 months on Ellie and nothing unrealistic has happened. That was just oral surgery ($600), spay and liver biopsy ($600), bile acid test twice ($200), miscellaneous office visits and an xray (a few hundred). It gets expensive.

Cathi, I know you had posted awhile back about 4 breeders backing out on you..Were those breeders of yorkies? If so, weren't they more expensive than $300-$500? I know there are some yorkies in this area for $500-$600 still

I hope you want an inexpensive Yorkie so that you can have $$ to spend on vet bills. Even an inexpensive Yorkie can be a huge expense. It's not the food or the toys, those are cheap because they are so small. But the vet bills are insane, even with our reasonably priced, wonderful vet.

I can definitely say I've spent thousands on vet bills in the past couple years. $300 each for s/n, and it seemed $200 every time Loki gets sick which was almost monthly until he was 1yr old. $60/bottle for glucosamine, $30/bottle for Loki's PPA, $60 for heartworm meds... Now Loki's on a drug that is over $100 for a 1 month supply. I just hope it works!

Sammy wasn't a rescue, but she was a re-home. I've spent over $600 on her just on shots and spaying and now she's probably going to need LP surgery probably at $1000/knee. Poor girl.

The other side of the story is that I needed Yorkies because I'm allergic to almost every other dog out there. I'd do it again in a minute!! I know you didn't ask, but I just wanted to make sure you knew what you were getting into. Rescues are going to be hard because Yorkies go fast. I find that they are adopted by volunteers/friends/relatives/etc and NEVER make it to the website or adoption days. You will probably have to find a puppy or a retired breeder. Can you contact some local breeders and tell them you would love to get a retired female? Have you tried petfinder? Again you have to be a perfect candidate for adoption. Fence, no kids, home all day, etc. They are very strict. It's not always fair, but that's just how it is. Good luck!

Keep looking! your perfect baby is out their somewhere.

I adopt my first yorkiemix, schatzie from the shelter in Anderson SC. she was $60 and that included her spay and shots. She was about 10 mnths old when I adopted her. Mom ended up falling in love and dognapping her one summer, and I just couldnt' take her back after mom had fallen in love

My little boy yorkiepoo rescue was a bit more than $60, but worth every penny. i got him at 2 mnths old.

are you willing to travel a bit?

here is one from petfinder classifieds:

Owner: ft.pierce, FL
flasun66@msn.com
Gina Lopez

Name: Ralphie

Age: Adult

Sex: Male

Size: Small

My name is Ralphie a cute black/tan Yorkie poo. I am 2yrs old & weigh about 6lbs. My hair is that of a yorkie..i am non shed, crate trained,& not food pickey.
I am looking for a forever home because my mommy doesnt have alot of time to spend with me anymore. I am okay with older kids but I would prefer a home with an older prson who has time to take me for walks and spoil me.

I am healthy, neutered & microchipped. My only bad habit is that my mommy neutered me late and every once in a very rare while I will have a leg lift accident(dont forget..I am a small dog with a tiny bladder..when I have to go..I have to go.)

My adoption fee is $75.00

SladesMommy, that was so nice of you to look that up for her.

Cathi, keep looking. There is one out there looking for you, it just might take him/her a while to find you. When you check on petfinder.com make sure you check out the classified ad section. These are animals that aren't in shelters, just individuals looking to rehome for some reason. That's where I found Sugar. She was 3 years old & 12 pounds (exactly what I was looking for at the time) and she was already house trained and she's so well behaved. If you have your heart set on a puppy though it will be harder to find one that's inexpensive. Give yourself plenty of time before you give up. These guys are worth waiting for. Good luck!

I can honestly say, I've been very fortunate in vet bills..mine get their yearly rabi shots, and out of 4 adult dogs, besides the spaying and neutering, which I get done for $45, they haven't cost me anything besides food and toys..I did have to have a tumor removed from my 5 year old yorkie last month, that cost under $400, but other than that nothing! I have always given them hard kibbles and greenies, and the vets were very impressed with the yorkies teeth..they couldn't believe I didn't brush her teeth, nor ever had her teeth brushed..

Cathi. if you are struggling to afford the initial cost of a Yorkie, this probably isn't a good time to get one. Dogs can be expensive to own, especially as they age. This is a good article that will give you an idea of the cost of owning a dog:

http://www.peteducation.com/article....articleid=1543

As a few others have mentioned, looking for a "bargain" puppy is a big mistake. Poorly bred Yorkies are less expensive, but can come with genetic time bombs just waiting to go off because their breeder didn't know about genetics and didn't do any health screening before breeding.

Why not start saving now for a wonderful Yorkie in the future when you are better prepared financially to afford it?

Yes, definitely make sure you could afford the vet bills if your dog suddenly got sick or injured. I've been pretty fortunate with Lacy so far - mostly just yearly check-ups and an eye infection once that wasn't too expensive to treat. A couple months ago though she developed a urinary tract infection which cost me $300 to treat...and that was just for a little urinary tract infection. She also has LP which I'm really hoping she'll never need surgery for (not bothering her right now) but that could cost $1500 if she does end up needing surgery. I have a friend whose minpin broke its leg jumping from her husbands arms - cost her about $600 to fix. So please make sure you can afford to care for the dog before you get one

But...I would like to point out that I am a college student who has 5 Yorkies...and a part time job...and I still manage to do it. What it takes more than money is dedication...I KNEW when I wanted each Yorkie that there was a chance any of them could get sick or hurt...and I'm prepared to pay everything I have and go into debt for each and every one of them if I have to. I'm not saying going into debt is a good thing...but if you're not financially blessed and you still enjoy the company of your babies...as long as you're willing to do whatever is necessary to keep them healthy and happy...
