| How to train a yorkie the down and hand command? I have a shar pei and i had no problem training him, however with my 2 yorkies i'm having missivie issues with the down and hand command which i have tried everything. Both yorkies love SmokeHouse chicken breast tender treats and i use small pieces to train them, however they just seem not understanding what i'm trying to tell them. I have been very patience with them, asking them to down in the sit position, then gently pull his hands on the ground hold it for 5 secs and repeat the "down" command then give themt the treat. However, it's been 2 months they still have not understand that command. Can some experts here help me out witht he training commands? Thank you very very much if they could learn the down and hand command. |

| take ur finger and gently press the small of their back down as u say it. do this for 10 minutes a few times a day if you can. Ryoko learned this in less than a week if i recall. I also did a head down command with him in the same fashion, when he was in the down position I gently pressed his head down while saying head down, and the next day he was doing it with just the command! u can treat them as you see fit, I try not to treat after the first few times because Yorkies are smart turds and they will figure out that this is what i have to do for a treat, if she does not have a treat in her hand, if i don't see or smell a treat, then i ain't gonna do no tricks!. Depending on the difficulty i use a treat(which is his own food in my case) until they get the idea. Then i do the command as often as i can with no treat and at least once a day. http://www.loveyourdog.com/tricks2.html#kiss combine what you think works best with the advice you get |

My furkids Donating Member | This was one of the commands the girls were taught when they went to school. Lillie goes down before I even give her the command. (Lillie is 14 months) Sadie just doesn't get it yet (Sadie is 3 1/2 yrs) You first have to make them sit, (make sure you have the treat in your hand) then tell them down, they are probably not going to do it so....take their front legs and slide them out in front of them and MAKE them go down...tell him/her to stay and make him/her stay for a couple of seconds...then say up (if he/she doesn't stand back up put your hand under their belly and make them stand) Praise her like she just won the lottery!! and give her/him their treat. Terriers have a mind of their own and are not known to be real easy in obedience. But, with consistency (only work with your furbaby 5 minutes at a time...you don't want him/her getting bored) you will get them to do this Good Luck!

| More valuable information. Thanks guys. Is 10 minutes the usual amount of time to spend in training?

| Most training manuals DVDs and websites say 10 minutes.. Now if ur baby is having fun you can do more. Its just that some people overdue it i guess but 10 minute intervals have worked well for me.. Now I am on my second Yorkie and he makes my other look like the perfect well trained dog lol. |

| Very useful site http://www.loveyourdog.com/tricks2.html Another Yter recommended it a few weeks ago. I found it to be very helpful.

| The way I was taught to teach the down when my bloodhound was in her classes was to make them sit then hold a treat right in front of their front legs on the ground. Depending on the dog you may need to bring it out further from the dog, a bigger dog will need it a bit further out just put it far enough out that they can get to it with their nose. As they put their head down to get it slowly pull it away from them and they will stretch out to get it and lay down in the process. I'm pretty sure this is the way we did it with Reagan too and she picked it up pretty quick. If they tend to stnad up and just walk toward the treat you can put your hand on their back just to keep them from standing up.
