| Bath time?! Hi everyone, I am picking up my baby a week from today, she will be 11 weeks old. Little Faith is my first yorkie, first puppy actually! So yorkie care is new to me. How often do you bathe your yorkies? Brush their teeth? It gets a little confusing because I been reading up on so much and every book, magazine, etc. tell you something different. I know it probably depends on the yorkie's environment and all, but I was just wondering. Also, do they like baths or is it a struggle? Christine |

| Gidget gets a bath at least once a week....sometimes two times depending on how dirty she manages to get......she likes to play in the sandbox with my son and roll in the dirt and has to "explore" when we go on walks....she is a bit of a tomgirl...she doesnt really like getting bath in the sink but she likes it when she takes a bath with my son I figure he uses kids shampoos and that so it should be ok for her......besides in the past 5 months or so she hasnt hand any itching or that now that it is summer though we buzzed her pretty short so she doesnt need too many baths now .....just see what works for your pup :P |

| Linus gets a bath once a week, and gets brushed every day (sometimes twice a day depending on what he does that day). We trim the hair under his eyes once a week, the hair on his ears and pawpads once every 2 weeks, and wipe his face and eye boogers with a warm, wet cloth once a day. We brush his teeth every other day, and he gets a greenie once every 3 days. I can't think of anything else right now...but I hope that helps some. Oh yeah, we have been doing that since we got him at 7 weeks (he's 4 months now).

| We were told not to bath them at all until they are 6 months - it's not good for their babyfur. And after that only once a month. They are dogs and are not designed to be bathed as often as us And remember - NEVER use human shampoo or conditioner - always use special products. Mink oil shampoo is really great

| Thanks! Hi again, thank you for the advice! I don't know what I would have done without yorkie talk lol. Thats so cute, yorkie playing in the sandbox! They al surely have a unique personality. Browsie, that is so sweet that you had yours from only 7 weeks! That is so special to watch them grow and be with them through it all. I guess it is good to start cleaning them as soon as they are ready this way they get used to it. I did buy her a little bath and an infant toothbrush etc. just so it is here when she is ready. I feel a little nervous about trimming her and cutting her nails myself but I guess in time i'll feel more confident about it. I will take her to get trimmed but I'm sure in between I'll touch her up. Thanks again! Have a good day! Christine |

| Hi, I recommend the first time you give her a bath to do it in a bath tub if you can, put on a bathing suit and get in first then put her in. As her leader you will be comforting her by showing her that it is safe because you are in there aswell. Often times dog need the reassurance of their leader to show them that the water is safe and less safe. Dont make a big deal out of it, If you make a huge deal out of it, then she will relate baths a big deal from that day forward. The other day my dad's yorkie fell down some steps for the first time, when I saw him I tried my best not to freak out and I just looked at him and asked "are you okay?" and he looked at me, got up and trotted off. A couple of months ago my mothers yorkie slipped down the steps for the first time aswell, my mother was there and freaked out, I came in and saw Gunter freaking out aswell. My mothers yorkie refuses to go down the steps anymore, and my fathers yorkie is not bothered if he slips once or twice he still goes down. |

| Excellent idea on getting into the tub! Ralphie has had one maybe 2 baths (do not know what the breeder did)--he was so scared-that I have not even tried again since that bad episode. I think the tub idea is great! After Raplhie is feeling better, I am going to try that..thanks to everyone for sharing such great ideas.. what would we neubie Yorkie owners do without the experience of you all!

| You must be so excited to get baby home! Chewy is 4 months and I have only given him baths to clean up his "accidents" and there will be a few for you too! My best tip for the bath is put a washcloth in the sink for them to stand on otherwise he will slip around and when puppy is done wrap him up in a towl and keep him warm. I comb out his hair every night an this keeps him pretty handsome looking. I'm not so crazy on baths every week...The worst thing is the potty training but if you stick to it and be consistent you will be OK. I have 2 books that helped me: Yorkshire terriers for dummies and the Yorkshire terrier handbook by Barrons. I got a lot of good info and of course, you will pick up great tips here. |

| Hi Staci, I give Kacee a bath every week. She's outside all of the time. In fact, she loves it outside. She digs and rolls in the dirt and grass, whether it's wet or not. Yep! Muffin was my little girl. Kacee is my tomboy! In fact, this week we didn't make it a whole week before we got another bath! |

| If I had to wait 6 months and then once a month my husband would put us both out. I have had dogs a long time and I have never heard of that.

| sounds great! Wow, each and every one of you have great advice and stories! Thank God for yorkie talk! Very smart to put the wash cloth in the sink, I wouldn't have thought of that! I was thinking to get her a little tupper wear bin or something to fill with a little water and put the whole thing in. I like the washcloth! Also, that is sooo unique to take a bath with the yorkie! I gotta try that. It sounds like a fun way to help the yorkie bond and build trust too! Thats adorable. LOL and I'll try the best I can not to let her walk over me. . .it is so hard though! I am counting the days to bring her home! I went to visit her today, didn't want to leave her! Thank you again for all of your original ideas and great advice! |

| Be gentle and patient. You may put a few toys in with the baby and just have a play time first. The only other thing I can say is treats, treats, treats...
